Good points about Adelphi Forty-Nine

The rooms are the big selling point of the Adelphi Forty-Nine. All the rooms at the Adelphi Forty-Nine are split down the centre length ways into a bedroom and en-suite bathroom separated by a partition and door from a lounge and kitchen area. These rooms are excellent for families or couples who might need to sleep at different times, and also for business travellers who might need to work from their room or want to prepare food in the room for convenience. Not all visitors to Bangkok necessarily want to go out every evening, and the Adelphi Forty-Nine is a comfortable place to stay in and eat a meal whilst watching a movie.

The service at the Adelphi Forty-Nine is excellent. The front of house staff are both efficient and friendly, which is a combination of qualities you don’t find often at hotels in Central Bangkok. The cleaning staff are similarly thoughtful and helpful. Unlike some larger hotels where the service appears to suffer from the hotel employing too few staff, the Adelphi Forty-Nine has found the right formula in terms of the ratio of the number of staff to the number of guest rooms. The Adelphi Forty-Nine is run by the Adelphi Hospitality Group which currently has four hotels, three in Bangkok and one in Pattaya, and it’s clearly a professional and efficient organisation benefiting from the economies of scale afforded by operating multiple sites without being such a large organisation that they lose a grasp of the small details that make for a great hotel.

The Adelphi Forty-Nine also has a good location. It’s a on a side street a few hundred metres up the Sukhumvit Road from the the lower section of the road which is most popular with shorter term holiday makers to Bangkok. There are plenty of convenience stores and restaurants nearby, as well as being close to a BTS (skytrain station) and not so far from some large shopping centres and private fitness facilities. For families and business travellers the location is better than being on the lower and busier part of the Sukhumvit Road as it puts some distance between you and the negative aspects of mass tourism in Bangkok.

Rooms at Adelphi Forty-Nine

There are three room types at the Adelphi Forty-Nine: the One Bedroom Suite, the One Bedroom Premier and the One Bedroom Executive. The rooms are all basically the same. The One Bedroom Suite, at 50 sqm, is the smallest and cheapest room type. The One Bedroom Premier, at 58 sqm, is the largest. The big differences between the standard suite and the Premier suite is that the premier suite have a proper work desk (the standard suite does not) and the Premier suite has a sofa in the bedroom as well as the lounge.

All the rooms at the Adelphi Forty-Nine come with a double bed. If guests want to sleep in separate rooms, perhaps because they are a couple with small children, then one person will need to sleep on the sofa. The beds are very comfy and the bedroom has its own separate air-conditioner unit and TV. The bedside lamps and power points are very useful.

The bathrooms at the Adelphi Forty-Nine are very good. The separate shower units feature a bathtub and properly hot water with an unusually good level of water pressure for a hotel in Bangkok. The electronic Japanese toilet is easy to work but its not necessarily a selling point to Western visitors. I am not sure whether this makes the hotel more popular with Japanese visitors, but it certainly doesn’t detract from the appeal of the bathrooms.

The other half of the rooms at the Adelphi Forty-Nine are long and narrow with a lounge area at the far end by the balcony. The L-shaped sofas are comfortable and can accommodate three people, with a space at the end to sit with your legs raised and a convenient coffee table. The flat screen TVs have an above range of satellite channels in a wide variety of foreign languages. If you want to sit a proper table then there is a small desk in all the rooms and a small seperate dining table.

The kitchens at the Adelphi Forty-Nine are good. There is a cooker with two hot plates and a microwave with built in grill. In the cupboards are plates, cutlery, glasses and cups, as well a small range of pots and pans. You could cook a full meal here although what is provided is better suited to heating up take away food and preparing breakfast. There are also a kettles and particularly good washing machines with short cycles perfect for washing underwear and socks, which will dry quickly on the private balconies. Next to the lobby on the group floor of the Adelphi Forty-Nine is the hotel’s restaurant, the Tempuraya. As well as serving guests with breakfast, this restaurant serves a range of classic Japanese comfort foods such as katsu curry and Japanese hamburger with rice. The prices are a little on the expensive side but on a par with other similar Japanese restaurants in the area. The hotel restaurant is a good option for late night arrivals as they provide room service. Menus for the restaurant are in the room and orders can be made very easily by dialling ‘0’ on the phone in the room to speak to reception.

The Adelphi Forty-Nine also has a swimming pool and a gym on the 7th floor, which is on the top floor. Both swimming pool and gym are compact but adequate given that in practice they are little used by guests. The gym has a variety of cardio machines, a good range of dumbbells and two benches. Fitness enthusiasts will be able to have an adequate work out here. For a more extensive work outs there is a Fitness First Gym at the nearby Rain Hill Shopping Mall.
