Anusarn Market is one of several night markets located off the Chang Klan Road in the riverside area of Chiang Mai.
Anusarn Market is cheaper and more relaxed than the famous Kalare Night Market and Night Bazaar on the same street, it is also further down the road than these two better known markets and for this reason gets less visitors.
About Anusarn Market
The Anusarn Market market opens at 16:00, although in practice it is not until about 20:00 that all the stalls open and the place gets busy. Closing time for market is midnight.
Following recent improvement work, Anusarn Market is now mostly covered by a roof which means it is somewhere you can visit even if it’s rainy, unlike the popular Sunday Night Walking Street in Old Town which occasionally gets stopped by the weather because it is an open air market.
The majority of the stalls at Anusarn Market sell souvenir type items which you generally you can bargain for. The prices are moderate and very few high value items are on sale at this market.
Some of what is sold Anusarn Market is the same as you find at market stalls across Thailand such as mass produced t-shirts and shorts for example. There are, however, some more unique items on sale at the market which are made in the Northern Thai ‘Lanna’ style and these hand made products are worth paying a bit more money for as the quality is better.
The thing that really makes Anusarn Market appealing to visitors is that the market is a great place to eat and drink and spend a whole evening being entertained. The range of food options is very wide at this market, from cheap Thai food at the food court to more expensive sit down restaurants selling seafood, Western food, Indian, Middle Eastern and Italian dishes.
The food court is cheap. Expect to pay 50 to 80 THB for most dishes. The seafood restaurants are not cheap and nor are the Western style establishments such as the market’s long running Irish bar, O’Malley’s, where most dishes are priced in the 250 to 300 THB range which is about the same as you would be charged in Ireland for same food.
Anusarn Market is also a great place to come for a beer. The market has a umber of ‘beer stations’ where a draught beer costs around 80 THB and some popular bars where you can listen to music, such as the Thai-European Food and Rock Bar which has live bands performing covers of Western music every night.
Anusarn Market also hosts two live entertainments venues: a Muay Thai boxing arena and a ‘ladyboy’ cabaret show. Entrance to the boxing show costs 500 THB and entrance to the cabaret is 290 THB including a beer or free soft drink.
