Travel in Koh Phangan
The only public transport in Koh Phangan is by shared taxi service. Shared taxis depart from Thong Sala Ferry Port and relatively expensive compared to shared taxi services else where in Thailand. Expect to pay 200 THB per person to travel from Thong Sala to Haad Rin (where the Full Moon Party takes place) and 300 THB per person to Thong Nai Pan or Haad Yao on the West Coast. The reason why shared taxis are so expensive in Koh Phangan is that the roads used to be very bad and the number of customers was often low. Now the roads have improved and the number of people visiting the island has increased but the fares have not dropped.
Alternatives to using shared taxis include renting your own motorbike or car, using motorbike taxis or arranging for a transfer from the pier. Automatic motorbikes can be hired near to the pier for 250 THB per day and small cars or jeeps for around 1,000 THB. You will asked to leave your passport and charged extra for any damages before your passport is returned to you. Motorbike taxis cost more than shared taxis on most routes except for the short distance journeys from Thong Sala to the Ban Tai Road, where you can be expect to pay around 100 THB. A motorbike taxi from Thong Sala to Haad Rin should cost you around 300 to 400 THB. A lot of people choose to use a shared taxi to reach the place where they are staying and then rent a motorbike to get around from their resort or a nearby motorbike rental shop. Some local motorbike rental shops are more reliable and honest than others – they are not all the same – so ask around for recommendations.
