Public Transport in Bangkok
Bangkok has a fantastic range of public transport systems. What Bangkok’s public transport lacks in terms of speed and comfort it more than makes up for in eccentricity and fantastic scenery. The slowest and most uncomfortable way to travel around Bangkok is generally by local bus services. Local bus services in Bangkok are, however, very cheap and cover routes not on the rapid suburban railway networks. The two most efficient of these suburban railway networks are the MRT undergrounds network and the BTS overhead railway network, popularly known as the ‘skytrain’. The BTS and MRT networks are expanding to cover more and more part of the city, although the take up of these services is affected by the relatively expensive fares compared to other forms of public transport.

For an enjoyable journey the best forms of public transport travel on the city’s waterways. The Chao Phraya Express Boat company operates an efficient and cheap commuter service along the city’s main river with stops at major tourist destinations such as the Grand Palace and near to the Khao San Road. For tourists the service is both a way from travelling around the city and an extremely cheap boat tour with fares stating at less than 20 THB. The other major water based public transport option in Bangkok is the Khlong Saen Saep canal boat service which operates on an 18 km route on an east to west axis. The Khlong Saen Seap canal boat services runs through busy parts of Bangkok including the Sukhumvit Road area and Pratuman terminating in the west close to Democracy Monument and the Golden Mount. Fares on the Khlong Saen Saep canal boat service are also very cheap with fares ranging from 8 to 20 THB.
