The journey with the Seatran Discovery Company from Koh Phi to Koh Tao has three sections: a ferry journey to the mainland; a bus journey from the Andaman coast to the Gulf coast; and finally another ferry journey to get from there to Koh Tao, with stops at Koh Samui and Koh Phangan on route.

Full Moon Party

If you are planning to travel during the period leading up to one of Koh Phangan’s monthly Full Moon Parties make sure you book in advance. 10,000 to 30,000 people attempt to travel to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party each month and travel tickets sell out in advance of the day of travel. Koh Tao is on the same travel route as Koh Phangan so it will effect your journey to Koh Tao even if you have no intention of going to the Full Moon Party.

Independent Travel to Koh Tao

To do this journey independently, which can be cheaper than taking the direct service, you will need to take a ferry from Koh Phi Phi to Klong Jilard pier and arrange your own transfers from there to Krabi Bus Station to catch the bus to Surat Thani city. From Surat Thani city you then need to take a bus for a 90 minute journey to Donsak ferry pier for the boat to Koh Tao. Alternatively from Surat Thani you can catch the Night Boat at 23.00 from Surat Thani town centre which arrives the next day at 08.00 in Koh Tao. The boat may not run if the weather is bad. The Night Boat service gets mixed reviews from passengers.

The service to Koh Tao departs from Ton Sai pier in the centre of Koh Phi Phi island. The main town of the island is located on Ton Sai beach.

Mae Haad Pier in Koh Tao

The Seatran Discovery service arrives at Mae Haad Pier. If you are staying at Sairee beach you may be able to walk to your hotel or resort. Otherwise take a songthaew (converted pick up truck) there are always lots of them waiting for people to arrive at the pier. If you are staying in the far North of Koh Tao you may need to take a taxi boat. You can hire taxi boats at Mae Haad Pier.
