I am taking my wife’s mother on a break to Chang Mai and I have endlessly been searching for a way to get from Phrae – Chiang Mai for a 3 night stop over with my wife’s mother in law. I cannot find any transportation to get from Phrae to Chiang Mai. Flights don’t operate on such a short distance and I’m not keen on driving in Thailand so I was wondering if you have any info on how I can do this route with out hiring a car. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Steve

Hi Steve
Thanks for getting in touch. You have three public transport options to get from Phrae to Chiang Mai:
Option 1: Direct Bus
Bus from Phrae Bus Station to Chiang Mai Bus Station. Phrae Bus Station is just off the Yantrakit Kosol Road about 2km north of Big C in Phrae town centre. From there several companies do the Phrae-Chiang Mai route including the Green Bus Company which has departures at 06.00, 08.00, 9.00 and 12.00 every day. The journey takes 3 hours 50 minutes.
Option 2: Bus to Den Chai and Bus from Den Chai to Chiang Mai
Take a local bus or taxi to the town of Den Chai bus station and book a bus from Den Chai to Chiang Mai. Den Chai is a large town which you have to drive through to get from Phrae to Chiang Mai. Den Chai is about 25 km from Phrae and it takes 30 minutes to drive. From Den Chai the buses take 3 hours to get to Chiang Mai.
Option 3: Bus to Den Chai and Train to Chiang Mai
There is also a railway station at Den Chai where most trains on the Northern Line stop.
