The easiest way to travel from Koh Lanta to Hat Yai is to take the car ferry from Koh Lanta to Hua Hin Pier on the mainland, and from there to take a bus or minivan to Hat Yai. An alternative is to travel by speedboat from Saladan Pier in Koh Lanta to Koh Muk, from there take a ferry and minivan to Trang, where you can board a bus to Hat Yai. In theory this route from Koh Lanta to Hat Yai is nearly as quick (although twice as expensive), however, it would be difficult to avoid long waits between the various speedboat, ferry, minivan and bus services you need to take which will massively increase the overall journey time from Koh Lanta to Hat Yai. Travel via Koh Muk would be a fun option for someone who had the time to stay overnight on route.

Journey to Hat Yai
The first stage of any journey from Koh Lanta is a ferry to the mainland. There are two ferry piers in Koh Lanta, Firstly, there is Klong Mak Pier which is a car ferry pier and the place to go if you want to catch the quickest and cheapest ferries to the mainland. Secondly, there is Saladan Pier on Koh Lanta Yai, the main island. From Saladan Pier you can travel to variety of destinations by ferry and by speedboat, including Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Muk and Klong Jilard Pier near Krabi Town.
From Hua Hin Pier, which is the pier on the mainland which the car ferry from Koh Lanta arrives at, it is a 258 km to 293 km road journey to Hat Yai City depending on which route you take. The quickest and shortest route by road from Hua Hin Pier to Hat Yai City is travel eastward via Trand Phattalaung to join the Phetkasem Road which is the main road running south from Bangkok all the way to Hat Yai. The journey by car via the fastest route from Hua Hin Pier to Hat Yai takes around 3 hours 40 minutes if you drive without stopping.
