The Raja Ferry Company is the operator of the car ferry service between Koh Phangan and the Thai mainland. The Raja car ferry is not a luxury service, it is a commuter service used by local travellers as well as tourists.

The car ferry is, however, comfortable enough for a 2 hour 30 minute sea journey. The ferry has plenty of seating inside and out. The seating area inside is fan cooled and the outside seating is cooled by the wind. The car ferry has shop and toilets as well as plenty of room to walk around. They are are big boats which can travel in most weather conditions, and are rarely cancelled even if other ferry services cannot operate due to the rough seas. If you travel on the Raja car ferry bear in mind that you will need to be able to carry your bags up and down 3 flights of step stairs. This may be a struggle for the elderly or people travelling with young children and lots of baggage.

About the Seatran Ferry Service

Seatran Ferry has been operating car ferry services between Surat Thani and Koh Samui since 2002. The service was extended to Koh Phangan in 2021, ending the monopoly on car ferry services to Koh Phangan previously enjoyed by the Raja Ferry Company.

The Seatran Ferry service replaced the faster passenger only service between Surat Thani and Koh Phangan operated by a subsidiary of the same company, Seatran Discovery.

Koh Phangan Ferry Port

All services arrive at Koh Phangan’s main ferry port in Thong Sala. The only transport available on Koh Phangan is shared taxis and motorbike taxis. Both types of taxi are always waiting at the pier whenever a ferry arrives.

• Travel Tip: The prices of shared taxis at Thong Sala Ferry Port tend to be fixed and there is no difference in price if you go with one of the taxi touts who waits at the pier or approach the drivers directly.
