Klong Dao Beach, Koh Lanta

Klong Dao Beach is a 2 km long beach in the north of Koh Lanta Yai, which is main island on Koh Lanta. Klong Dao Beach is the most developed of the beaches on Koh Lanta because of its proximity (within walking distance) of the main town, Saladan.

Klong Dao Beach is a wide strip of fine white sand with no beach vendors, no sun-lounger, no beach umbrellas and no restaurant tables or chairs. Construction has also been controlled so that nothing has been built beyond the natural tree line. Klong Dao Beach has basically been left in its natural state.

About Klong Dao Beach

Although Klong Dao Beach is not the most beautiful beach in Thailand it may, however, be the most family friendly beach in South East Asia and the large number of families you see on the beach every day during the tourist season is evidence of this.

Klong Dao Beach has everything a family with young children need for a good beach holiday. Firstly, and most importantly, the beach is clean as is the water. It is also safe for swimming. There are no rocks on the sea floor near the shore and the depth of the water increases very slowly. The shallow slope of the sea bed means smaller waves and fewer rip tides. Children can swim very safely here.

Klong Dao Beach attracts few younger visitors. There is very little nightlife on Klong Dao Beach and what there is tends to be very laid back. Koh Lanta has no ‘red light’ district and the most lively place in the area in the evening is Saladan’s Walking Street, which is another family oriented attraction. There is pretty much zero chance any families coming to stay on Klong Dao Beach will witness any anti-social behaviour, unlike other destinations such Patong Beach in Phuket or Chaweng Beach in Koh Samui where you see drink misbehaving young tourists every night.

Klong Dao Beach does though have loads of places to eat and drink on the beach front, and shops. Some of the restaurant there, such as Time for Lime and The Table, are excellent and there are also cheaper restaurants serving standard Thai food, such as Rann Restaurant and Krua Dan Tai Restaurant, and places serving International food which will be more familiar and palatable to children unfamiliar with Asian cuisine, such as Ling Uan (Fat Monkey) Restaurant and the Koala Bar. What will appeal to families is the range of what is available within a small area all located on Klong Dao Beach.

By comparison with other beach resort in Thailand, the accommodation on Klong Dao Beach is great for value for money. There is lots of choice and places that will suit pretty much all budgets, and all located a short distance from a white sand beach good for swimming. Cheap hotels like the Lemonade Boutique Inn (from 450 THB) offer good clean basic rooms, whilst upmarket hotels like the Twin Lotus Resort and Spa (from 4,250 THB a night) offer luxurious beach front accommodation with large swimming pool and spa. If you are considering where to take your family on a relaxed 2 week beach break then Klong Dao Beach is well worth considering.
