About Travel to Hua Hin

Hua Hin is a small city with around 60,000 residents which attracts around 10 million leisure visitors a year, over 90% of whom are Thai tourists. The main industry in Hua Hin is tourism and the city has a very developed tourist infrastructure, as well as good transport links.

Hua Hin for Visitors

Hua Hin has a slightly different character to many of Thailand’s other major beach resort destinations such as Phuket, Pattaya, and Hua Hin. The city has some nightlife, but not that much, and younger foreign visitors tend not to visit the city in great numbers. The city is popular with families and older people who prefer not to be near alcohol induced anti-social behaviour.

Accommodation in Hua Hin

Hua Hin has over 200 tourist hotels and guesthouses to choose from. The prices vary a lot according to location and the quality of the accommodation, and also the season. Bargain hunters can often find great deals on fairly luxurious resorts slightly out of season.

Rooms in guesthouses and small hotels cost from 500 THB a night. The city’s most expensive hotel, the Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin, charges from around 12,000 THB a night for a standard room.

Hua Hin Beach

Hua Hin City has a single beach, it’s 5 km long and known simply as Hua Hin Beach. The sand is generally clean and from January through to the end of September each year the weather is normally calm enough to swim safely in the sea.

The only part of Hua Hin Beach that ever gets crowded is the part of the beach right in the centre of the city near the Hilton Hua Hin Resort. Visitors only need to walk a short distance either to the north or south before the beach becomes a lot quieter.

Seafood Restaurants

One of the things Hua Hin is particularly well known for is seafood. Thai visitors coming for short breaks, particularly those travelling in large groups, will typically visit a seafood restaurant during their visit. The cheapest places in Hua Hin to eat seafood are stalls in one of the city’s markets. A more expensive option is to eat at the city’s most famous seafood restaurants which are clustered together on the Nares Damri Road.

The special thing about the seafood restaurants on the Nares Damri Road is that they are built on former fishing piers, with the dining area elevated above the sea. Seafood purchased by weight and cooked to order is by far the most expensive option on the menus at these restaurants. Many, however, also offer fixed price menus of the day for more affordable prices.

Markets in Hua Hin

One of the most popular evening time activities for visitors to Hua Hin is to go to a night market. Hua Hin’s main night markets are lively with plenty of places to eat and drink, often more cheaply than in formal restaurants. Entertainment, such as live music, is also typically arranged for visitors during the tourist high season,

Hua Hin’s four main night markets are:

  • Hua Hin Night Market, which is located only 500 metres from Hua Hin Railway Station.
  • Grand Market, which is located 1.5 km by road to the south of Hua Hin Railway Station.
  • Tamarind Market, which is located 4 km by road to the south of Hua Hin Railway Station.
  • Cicada Market, which is located near Tamarind Market.
Khao Takiap

Khao Takiab, also known as Chopstick Hill, is a 270 high peak located just over 5 km by road to the south of Hua Hin City. There’s a temple near the top of the hill along with other religious buildings and a tall golden statue of the Lord Buddha. The other feature of the hill which attracts visitors is the large number of wild monkeys.

Other Attractions in Hua Hin

The two main cultural attractions in the area are located some distance from Hua Hin City itself:

  • Mrigadayavan Palace: Located 18 km by road to the north of Hua Hin City, the Mrigadayavan Palace is an attractive wooden palace built in the 1920s close to the beach. It’s open to visitors when not in use by Thailand’s royal family.
  • Huaymongkol Temple: Located 19 km by road to the east of Hua Hin City, Huaymongkol Temple is a large temple best known for its 12 metre tall statue of a famous monk. The temple grounds are large and feature ornamental buildings and landscaped gardens.

Other popular attractions in Hua Hin include 2 large water parks, 12 golf full size golf courses, and a vintage shopping centre called Plearn Wan.
