About Travel to Koh Phi Phi
There are 6 Phi Phi Islands, only one of which is permanently inhabited, Koh Phi Phi Don, and this is where ferry and speedboat services from the mainland all terminate. Koh Phi Phi Don is the place to stay when exploring the Phi Phi Islands.
Koh Phi Phi Don
Koh Phi Phi Don is 7.8 km long by 3.6 km at its widest point. The island has 2,000 to 3,000 residents, although because of the large number of tourists and migratory workers it’s difficult to estimate how many people live on the island at any given time. The island has two characteristics which make it very special, firstly, the island is very hilly, and secondly, the island has two parts joined by a narrow strip of flat land.
This narrow strip of flat land is where the island’s main town is located, Tonsai Village. The vast majority of people who come to stay in Koh Phi Phi stay in Tonsai Village. The town is very overcrowded and the streets become very busy in the evenings during high season, as does Loh Dalum Beach, which is located in Tonsai Village itself.
For somewhere quieter to stay consider making the journey to Leam Thong Beach in the north of the island, or Long Beach which is much closer to Tonsai Village and the main ferry pier.
Boats in Maya Bay in Koh Phi PhiKoh Phi Phi Leh
Koh Phi Phi Leh is the second most visited of the 6 Phi Phi Islands. This island, located just 2 km to the south of Koh Phi Phi Don, is famous for being one of the locations where the ‘The Beach’ was filmed. The filming location on Koh Phi Phi Leh, Maya Bay, has recently been reopened to tourists. Too many visitors, and too many boats coming into the bay, for many years since the release of the film had badly affected the local environment particularly the sea life inside the bay.
Maya Bay was closed by the Thai government for several years and managed to largely rejuvenate itself. Sharks, for example, returned to live in the bay. Visitors are now required to follow strict regulation around visiting the bay and boats are no longer permitted to come into the bay itself. Passengers now disembark at a pier a short distance from Maya Bay and need to walk up and down steps to reach the beach.
