About Travel to Railay

Railay is a small peninsula in Krabi close to Ao Nang Beach, approximately 1.7 km long and 400 metres wide at its narrowest point, which is very popular with foreign tourists. Railay is notable for its hilly landscape and island feel which is a result of the steep hills cutting the peninsula off from road access to the rest of the mainland.

Walking from Ao Nang to Railay

Most travellers making the journey from Ao Nang to Railay will take a boat. It is not possible to complete the journey by road, although you can walk from Ao Nang to Railay. The path from Ao Nang to Railay, known locally as the ‘Monkey Trail’, starts from close to the southern end of Ao Nang Beach and climbs steeply through dense jungle before descending into the peninsula’s most northerly beach. From this first beach the walking route then climbs again steeply and descends equally steeply to reach the main beach.

The walk is hard work, particularly in the tropical heat and if you are carrying a bag. This option isn’t advisable for children or anyone with health problems.

Beaches in Railay

Railay has four beaches, and the peninsula’s accommodations, restaurants, shops and bars are all clustered around these four beaches. You can easily walk between three out of four of these beaches.

Each beach has its own character, and good and bad points, so we recommend giving some thought as to which beach might suit you best if you do plan to visit Railay:

  • Railay West Beach: This is the longest and busiest beach in Railay. The facilities are good and the scenery is beautiful, but for some the constant arrival and departure of boats may detract from the overall experience.
  • Phra Nang Beach: Despite being very close to Railay West Beach, Phra Nang Beach is much quieter as there are far fewer boats. At one end of the beach there is a cave you can explore.
  • Railay East Beach: Railay East Beach is not good for swimming and it’s noisy because the long distance ferry and speedboat pier is located on this beach. Behind the beach is a more built up area with lots of shops and restaurants, as well facilities such as a scuba diving centre and two Muay Thai camps.
  • Tonsai Beach: Tonsai Beach is separated from the other three beaches by a steep trail. Close to this beach are some of the best rock climbing routes in Railay and this is the place many people stay if they plan to go climbing.
