About Travel to Ao Nang

Ao Nang is a relatively small coastal town with around 15,000 permanent residents which is the most popular tourist destination in mainland Krabi Province, attracting in the region of 2 million leisure visitors a year. Ao Nang itself has no cultural or historical attractions but it does have 2 beaches and a very well developed tourist infrastructure which provides both wide range of choices and good value for money that visitors. Overall it tends to be a cheaper destination than Phuket or Koh Phi Phi.

Hotels in Ao Nang

Ao Nang has approximately 200 hotels, resorts and guesthouses, along with several hundred short let apartments that you can book online.

The least expensive accommodation is in shared dormitory rooms in hostels catering primarily to younger foreign travellers, such as KOKO Party Hostel 18 – 40 and Slumber Party Krabi. which charge from 200 THB a night. At the other end of the scale, Ao Nang’s most expensive hotel is the Centara Ao Nang Beach Resort & Spa Krabi which charges from 6,000 THB a night.

Restaurants and Nightlife

Part of the reason for Ao Nang’s popularity is that it offers lots of choice for visitors in terms of the types of food available and the types of bars you can visit in the evening. This tends to be most important for families, particularly young children who might be unwilling to eat unfamiliar foods. Ao Nang has several branded restaurants, such as Burger King, which serve food many foreign visitors will be familiar with from their own home countries. There are also lots of Indian food restaurants, alongside many other cuisines including Mexican and Italian. Ao Nang also has several Thai fine dining establishments.

Ao Nang also has a wide range of different types of bars. On the beachfront road there are several large modern sports bars. By way of contrast there is a single short road (RCA or Royal City Avenue) located away from the beachfront road with a row of hostess bars and late night discos.

Beaches in Ao Nang

Ao Nang has two beaches. The most popular of these beaches, and the most centrally located, is the 1.4 km Ao Nang Beach. Ao Nang Beach has clean white sand and is safe for swimming during good weather. The sea cliffs at the southern end of the beach are also stunning.

The only downside to Ao Nang Beach is that it gets very busy in high season, both with people and with many small wooden motor boats departing and arriving from the beach all day long. Noppharat Thara Beach, which is located 400 metres walking distance from the northern end of Ao Nang Beach, is generally much quieter. Noppharat Thara Beach is about the same length as Ao Nang Beach but it’s a lot wider so there’s much more space.

Visitor Attractions in Ao Nang

Ao Nang itself has very few visitor attractions. There’s a Muay Thai arena, an elephant park, and a ‘snake centre’ where people perform with dangerous snakes, and not much else. There are, however, some interesting places to visit nearby which are very popular.

The most popular day trip from Ao Nang is to Railay. Railay is a peninsula with dramatic scenery which is cut off from the rest of Krabi Province by steep hills. The only ways to travel to Railay are to walk along the very steep ‘Monkey Trail’ which starts at the southern end of Ao Nang Beach or to take a boat. Shared taxi boats to Railay depart from Ao Nang Beach.

The next most popular place to visit from Ao Nang is Krabi Town. Krabi Town is small with an attractive town centre riverside area. Krabi Town also has several really good markets that are worth visiting. The town’s morning market, Maharaj Market, is the largest fresh food market in Southern Thailand and has a really good food court that’s a popular breakfast venue for local people.

Krabi Town also has two popular night markets. One of these night markets is a food market located near the river. The other popular night market is Walking Street which opens on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Walking Street has a music stage and lots of stalls selling food and alcoholic drinks.

A third place which holidaymakers staying in Ao Nang often visit is Wat Tham Suea (which means Tiger Cave Temple in English). Wat Tham Suea is a Buddhist temple located 8 km by road to the north of Krabi Town that’s free to enter. The temple has a range of striking religious buildings, however, the two main attractions are its hilltop shrine and series of small caves. To reach the hilltop shrine you need to climb 1,200 steep steps. The views from the top are spectacular. To reach the caves you need to walk down about 200 steps. Many of the caves have shrines and one of the caves has markings on the wall which look like a tiger’s paw, and are the reason for the name of the temple.
