About Travel to Koh Lanta
There are 4 stages to the journey by public from Cheow Lan Lake to Koh Lanta. Booking a joint bus and ferry means that the same travel company is responsible for organising all 4 stages of the journey. The alternative, travelling using separate tickets and several transport operators, is difficult to do on this route and will add several hours to the journey without much, if any, cost saving.
Stage 1: Cheow Lan Lake to Krabi
The first part of the journey from Cheow Lan Lake to Koh Lanta is a 129 km journey by road from Cheow Lan Pier to Krabi Town. The service operated by Black Tiger Tour is scheduled to complete this stage of the journey in 2 hours. There is a single pick up point for this service (the car park near the pier) so there won’t be any of the delays you might sometimes experience travelling on a service that involves multiple hotel pick ups.
Stage 2: Krabi to Hua Hin Pier
The road route from Krabi to Koh Lanta involves travelling south by road 77 km to Hua Hin Pier. This second of the journey is scheduled to take around 1 hour 15. Passengers travelling with Black Tiger Tour will transfer to a minivan for the journey from Krabi to Hua Hin Pier 30 minutes after arriving in Krabi, providing passengers with enough time for a comfort break before continuing the journey.

Stage 3: Hua Hin Pier to Khlong Mak Pier
The shortest and least expensive ferry crossing from the mainland to Koh Lanta is via one of the car ferry services from Hua Hin Pier. These services typically take only 10 to 15 minutes to cross the 1.5 km wide sea channel separating Koh Lanta from the mainland. Because the journey is very short the car ferries have very few facilities and some passengers choose to remain in their vehicle the whole time.
Stage 4: Khlong Mak Pier to Koh Lanta Yai
Khlong Mak Pier is located at the northern end of Koh Lanta Noi. Koh Lanta Noi is an island to the north of the larger Koh Lanta Yai, which is where the beaches and the vast majority of the tourist accommodation is located.
From Khlong Mak Pier it’s a 9 km journey by road south to the main town, Saladan, on Koh Lanta Yai. On the way passengers will cross over the picturesque Siri Lanta Bridge.
The only public transport readily available on Koh Lanta is the local style of motorbike taxi where passengers travel in a side car with a roof. A faster option for travelling to your hotel is to arrange a minivan transfer in advance. The Black Tiger Tour service from Cheow Lan Lake to Koh Lanta includes a transfer to your hotel of choice. The exact arrival time therefore depends on where your hotel is located on the island.
