About Travel to Krabi

Krabi Town is the largest town in Krabi Province and a hub for transport to popular island destinations in the province, such as Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. Krabi Town is not, however, a popular tourist destination in its right to the same extent as nearby Ao Nang. Krabi Town has no beach, however, it’s an interesting place with several worth seeing cultural attractions.

Markets in Krabi Town

Krabi Town’s markets are very popular, both with the people who live in the area as well as leisure visitors. The town has several markets, three in particular attract a lot of visitors:

  • Maharaj Market is a massive indoor food market right in the centre of Krabi Town. You need to get up early to visit this market because it opens at 03:00 and closes by around 10:00. A full range of what’s grown or caught in Southern Thailand is on display at this market including a flower section and an enormous array of colourful and unusual vegetables native to this part of the country. Maharaj Market also has a very large food court and many people come here in the mornings only to eat.
  • Krabi Night Market is located on the riverside in the centre of the town. From around 17:30 every evening food vendors start to set up their carts in this open air market, along with tables and chairs for customers. Most of the food that’s sold here is inexpensive local Thai dishes, such as massaman curry, along with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. There are also some stalls offering seafood by weight, which is more expensive.
  • Walking Street is Krabi Town’s weekend tourist market, opening from 16:00 to 22:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. At the centre of the market is a stage with seating, and vendors selling drinks nearby. Near the stage are lots of stalls selling a wide variety of foods from pizza to Thai salads. Further towards the edges of the market are stalls selling clothes and souvenirs. Walking Street is popular because it’s fun.

Chaofa Park

Another of Krabi Town’s defining characteristics is its riverfront area, which is largely occupied by the very pleasant Chaofa Park. The park is a very popular place to visit in the late afternoon and early evening when the cooler temperatures make being outside more pleasant.

The park has a long riverside promenade from which visitors have magnificent views up and down the wide mangrove lined river mouth. You can also see the strangely shaped twin hills of Khao Khanab Nam. Other features of the park include several ferry piers with services to Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta, a sculpture garden, and the aforementioned Krabi Night Market.

Tiger Cave Temple

Located 7 km by road to the north of Krabi, Tiger Cave Temple is one of the most popular tourist attractions in mainland Krabi Province.

Tiger Cave Temple, or Wat Tham Suea in Thai, is named after the tiger paw-like impressions in the wall of a cave located within the temple ground. Visiting the caves is one of the two main attractions at this temple. The other is a hilltop shrine which you can only reach by ascending 1,260 steps, which is hard work in the heat of Southern Thailand.

Of less interest to many visitors are the exceptionally ornate temple buildings and statues located in the main part of the temple, where people come to pray.

No entrance fee is charged at the Tiger Cave Temple, although donations are welcome to help pay for the upkeep of the temple.
