About Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi is a small town with a population slightly over 30,000 permanent residents located on the beautiful Khwae Yai river. The area around the famous Bridge over the River Kwai gets a lot of visitors during the day, but in the evening and away from the main tourist centres Kanchanaburi is a lovely relaxed place to visit. The riverside resorts and guesthouses are great value for money and we recommend the Good Times Resort, which is a mid-range riverside resort with a large swimming pool and friendly atmosphere.

Other than bridge itself we recommend taking the time to explore the nearby World War 11 & JEARTH War Museum on the Maenamkwai Road. This small and slightly disorganised private museum is a treasure of artefacts relating the time of the Japanese Occupation and the forced labour of Allied POWs and much greater numbers of less well remembered Asian people drafted in to assist in the railway construction against their will. The museum is built in a temple and there are interesting Buddhist sculptures, statues and buildings incongruously located alongside the World War II era displays. You should also visit some of the war cemeteries in Kanchanaburi commemorating the Allied POW who died constructing the Death Railway. The most easily accessible of these war cemeteries is Chung Kai War Cemetery which is on the opposite side of the Sangchuto Road to Kanchanaburi Railway Station.
