About Travel to Hua Hin

Hua Hin is a small city on the east coast of Southern Thailand which is a very popular visitor destination. Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, where Hua Hin is located, is estimated to have attracted around 11 million leisure visitors in 2023 of which around 70% travelled to Hua Hin itself.

Tourism in Hua Hin

Hua Hin is predominantly a destination for Thai visitors, with foreign visitors accounting for around 5% to 6% of total tourist arrivals. Visitors began to come to Hua Hin during the 1920s following the construction of Thailand Southern Railway Line allowing easy access at a time when the country’s road network was poorly developed.

A small stream of visitors turned into a steady flow of holidaymakers from Bangkok over the course of the the 1920s and 1930s led by Thailand’s Royal Family which built several palaces in and around the city for use as holiday homes. Hua Hin’s major tourist attractions, such as the fish restaurants on the Nares Damri Road and Huaymongkol Temple, appeal most strongly to Thai visitors.

Foreign Visitors to Hua Hin

Hua Hin also appeals to many foreign visitors who find the atmosphere in the city much more pleasant than in more popular tourist destinations such as Pattaya, Phuket, and Koh Samui. Hua Hin doesn’t attract great numbers of younger visitors and it also doesn’t attract lots of single male visitors in the same way as Pattaya.

Hua Hin is far from boring. There are lots of places to visit, and things to do, but the city is generally a lot calmer and safer for families than most other tourist destinations in Thailand. Partly for these reasons, Hua Hin is a place with a lot of older longer term foreign residents.

Hua Hin Beach

Hua Hin has one 5 km long beach with white sand that is generally safe for swimming from January to September, depending on the timing of the monsoon which has become much more difficult to predict over the last two decades as global temperatures have increased. The busiest part of the beach is located right in the city centre close to the Hilton Hua Hin Resort. Other parts of the beach away from the city centre are much quieter.

Market in Hua Hin

Hua Hin has four major night markets. These night markets tend to be the liveliest places in the city at night, particularly Hua Hin Night Market on the Dechanuchit Road, which is close to the train station. The stalls selling clothes and souvenirs are not the most popular attractions, but rather the food stalls which generally offer great seafood as value for money prices.

Also popular are the Cicada Market (4 km to the south of Hua Hin Railway Station), Tamarind Market (adjacent to the Cicada Market), and the Grand Market (1.5 km to the south of Hua Hin Railway Station).

Special Events in Hua Hin

Hua Hin also hosts a number of events, some of which attract international recognition. These range from music festivals to sporting events. Because of the easy access from Bangkok, and the facilities available at the city’s larger hotels, Hua Hin is an ideal location for these types of larger functions.

Among the best known events that frequently take place in Hua Hin are:

  • International Kite Festival (March or April)
  • Hua Hin Jazz Festival (May or June)
  • Hua Hin Vintage Car Rally (December)
