About the Phi Phi Islands

The name Koh Phi Phi is often used to refer to Koh Phi Phi Don, which is 1 of 6 islands in the Phi Phi Archipelago.

Koh Phi Phi Don is the only permanently inhabited of the 6 islands, and the only with any tourist accommodation. It’s therefore the start and finish point for long distance ferry and speedboat services to the Phi Phi Islands.

The other frequently visited island in the Phi Phi Archipelago is Koh Phi Phi Leh, which is located 2 km to the south of Koh Phi Phi Don. Koh Phi Phi Leh is a beautiful small island with two bays surrounded by dramatic sea cliffs, one of which (Maya Bay) was the main filming location for Hollywood blockbuster The Beach.

Tonsai Village

The main long distance ferry pier in Koh Phi Phi Don is Tonsai Pier, which is located in Tonsai Bay on the south side of Tonsai Village.

Tonsai Village is the focal point for tourism in Koh Phi Phi. It’s a very busy small town with hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops packed closely together on a small strip of flat land connecting the eastern and western halves of the island. The majority of the visitors to Koh Phi Phi stay overnight in Tonsai, although there is more peaceful accommodation available in other parts of the island such as Long Beach or Leam Thong Beach.

Viewpoints

One of the most popular, and also least expensive, activities for visitors to Koh Phi Phi is to walk up to the viewpoints overlooking Tonsai Village. The views are impressive, as is the spectacular geography of the islands.

The walk up to the viewpoint starts from the north eastern part of Tonsai Village. Follow the path up the hill which passes by the Lux Guesthouse until you reach a staircase, with around 500 steps, which ascends 170 metres up to the entrance to the first viewpoint. A small fee is payable to access the first viewpoint.

There are also 2 more viewpoints located further up the same hill. The walk to the second viewpoint is fairly short and doesn’t involve climbing any more stairs, or paying a further entrance fee. The walk to the third viewpoint is slightly further and there is a further entrance fee (the compulsory purchase of a drink) to enter the viewpoint.
