Krabi Province is a hugely popular tourist destination attracting, according to some estimates, around 6 million leisure visitors a year. There are lots of different places in Krabi Province to visit, including 154 islands.

Krabi Town

Krabi Town is the main transport hub for Krabi Province, with a nearby international airport, long distance bus station, and several ferry piers in the town or close to it. Krabi Town is also an interesting, and often overlooked, tourist destination in its own right and a pleasant place to stay despite lacking a beach.

Krabi Town is the cultural capital of the province. The town’s attractions include a very attractive riverside area and town centre park. Krabi Town also has three great night markets, and Southern Thailand’s largest fresh food market which opens in the morning. The atmosphere in the town, particularly in the early evenings, is very relaxed with local people enjoying the riverside night food market alongside leisure travellers.

Close to Krabi Town is one of Thailand most interesting temples, Wat Tham Suea. Wat Tham Suea, also known as the Tiger Cave Temple, is famous for its hilltop shrine with stunning views and its caves where once, according to legend, tigers lived.

Ao Nang

Ao Nang is the most popular mainland tourist destination in Krabi Province. Located 18 km by road to the south west of Krabi Town, the main attraction in Ao Nang is its 1.4 km long Ao Nang Beach and the nearby Noppharat Thara Beach. In addition to the beaches, Ao Nang is also popular because of the large number of restaurants and bars located on the beach road and in the town. Ao Nang is a very much a tourist resort destination with a large enough variety of food and accommodation options to satisfy the European and Russian families who come on holiday to Ao Nang is large numbers.

Railay

After Ao Nang, Railay is the second most popular tourist destination in Krabi Province. Railay is a mountainous peninsula which is inaccessible by road. The only ways to get to Railay are by boat or walking the steep ‘Monkey Trail’ from Ao Nang Beach. Inexpensive local wooden boat services operate between Ao Nang Beach and the west side of Railay Peninsula.

Railay has four beaches, the most popular of which are Railay West Beach and Phra Nang Beach just to the south also on the western side of the peninsula. Tonsai Beach, which is to the north of Railay West Beach, is much less developed and appeals more to younger independent travellers and is also a rock climbing centre.

Koh Phi Phi

From Krabi Town it takes around 2 hours to travel by ferry to Koh Phi Phi, and around 45 minutes to 1 hours if you travel by speedboat. There are several different ferry piers with services to Koh Phi Phi. The main ferry pier with the most frequent inexpensive ferry services to Koh Phi Phi is Klong Jilad Pier, located 4 km by road to the south west of Krabi Town.

Only 1 of the 6 Phi Phi islands has visitor accommodation, Koh Phi Phi Don. Koh Phi Phi Don has 1 major settlement which is located in the centre of island. Tonsai Village. Tonsai Village is the most built area on the island, and the many hotels, bars, and restaurants are closely packed together in this village where flat ground is at a premium. Tonsai Village gets very busy in the tourist season and is very popular with younger travellers who like to party late into the night. Visitors seeking a more peaceful stay in Koh Phi Phi may wish to consider staying in Long Beach or Leam Thong Beach in the north of the island.

Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is a much larger island than Koh Phi Phi Don, and its further away from Krabi Town. There are direct speedboat services from Krabi to Koh Lanta, however, not as many as from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi and the majority of these services depart from either Railay or Nopparat Thara Pier in Ao Nang.

The other disadvantage of direct speedboat services from Krabi to Koh Lanta is that they tend to be expensive. Many travellers either choose to travel by minivan and car ferry from Krabi to Koh Lanta, or to take a slow and cheap ferry service from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi (2 hours) and then another slow cheap ferry service to Koh Lanta ( a further 1 hour).

Both minivan and ferry services from Krabi to Koh Lanta arrive into Saladan Town which is in the north of Koh Lanta Yai. The 30 km west coast of Koh Lanta Yai has 9 beaches, nearly all of which have accommodation. The beaches in the north tend to be the most popular, with the beaches becoming less crowded and developed as you travel south from Saladan. The east coast of the island has no beaches, but it does have an interesting Old Town.
