About Travel to Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park is a popular tourist attraction located over 500 km by road from Hua Hin in the south of Thailand, to the west of Surat Thani City. Parts of the park are easily accessible to leisure visitors and there are a variety of different activities for visitors available as well as places to stay overnight in or near the park.

Nature Reserve

Khao Sok National Park is first and foremost a protected wildlife area rather than a tourist attraction. The park, which covers 739 square kilometres, is part of a larger nature reserve which consists of several different national parks totalling over 3,500 square kilometres. In terms of preserving rarer wildlife, particularly larger mammals such as leopards and tigers, size is important because these types of animals need vast hunting grounds to survive.

A really wide variety of animals, birds, fish, reptiles and plants live in Khao Sok National Park including 48 species of mammals, 311 species of birds, and 30 species of bats. The most famous plant in the park is the Rafflesia, which is the world’s largest flower. The Rafflesia blooms for about 3 months of the year from January through to the end of March and during this time treks to find these large flowers are popular.

The geography of the park is as varied as the flora and fauna. Around 60% of the park is mountainous with the highest peak rising to 960 metres above sea level. Another 22% of the park is taken up by the 165 square kilometre Cheow Lan Lake, which is a man-made lake notable for its irregular shape, series of steep-sided limestone islands, and the remnants of flooded settlements which become visible when water levels drop.

Accessing the Park

There are two main entry points to Khao Sok National Park, the Western Entrance and the Eastern Entrance. The Western Entrance is located near Koh Sok Village, also known as Khlong Sok Village, and the National Park Headquarters.

The other entrance to Khao Sok National Park, the Eastern Entrance, is Ratchaprapha Pier which is located on the eastern side of Cheow Lan Lake. Travel into the park via the Eastern Entrance is via local wooden boat services.

Staying Overnight near the Western Entrance

There is a small amount of basic bungalow accommodation inside Khao Sok National Park close to the National Park Headquarters. The range of food available inside the park is also limited. For these reasons most visitors accessing the park via the Western Entrance choose to stay overnight in Khao Sok Village.

There are around 30 tourist hotels, guesthouses, resorts, and hostels in Khao Sok Village. Some of the accommodation is inexpensive, such as the Coco Khao Sok Hostel which offers beds in shared dormitories. The better quality accommodation in Khao Sok Village, however, is more expensive than you might expect to pay on other mainland areas of Thailand away from the coast. Typically the most expensive place to stay in Khao Sok Village is the Malulee Khao Sok Resort, which charges over 4,000 THB a night for a standard room.

Activities near the Western Entrance

The Western Entrance to the park is the one to use if you plan to trek, spot wildlife, or participate in adventure sports such as ziplining or rafting. There is a canopy walkway near the entrance, along with ziplines. There are also 9 signposted walking trails starting and finishing near the entrance. For longer treks, and wildlife or plant spotting hikes, visitors need to join a tour or hire their own guide at the National Park Headquarters.

Travel from the Western Entrance to the Eastern Entrance

By road the distance from the Western Entrance to the Eastern Entrance of Khao Sok National Park is 65 km. It’s not really possible to trek through the park between the two entrances.
