About Travel to Bangkok

By road Bangkok is located around 770 km to the north of Khao Lak depending upon which route you take. Many bus services take the slightly longer route via Surat Thani, others a more direct route via Ranong. All direct bus services from Khao Lak to Bangkok, however, terminate in the area around the Khao San Road which is known as Talat Yot.

About Talat Yot

Talat Yot is a riverside area in Bangkok immediately to the north of Rattankosin Island, which is the oldest part of Bangkok where the Grand Palace and Wat Po are located. Talat Yot has been a popular area for foreign visitors since the 1980s. Its closeness to the major tourist attractions is one part of the area’s appeal. Another is the large amount of inexpensive tourist accommodation and budget food options in this part of Bangkok.

The Khao San Road itself is no longer really a budget destination, however, great deals on hotels and food are still easy to find in the surrounding streets. Overall it’s still the cheapest of the popular tourist areas in Bangkok. The only downside of staying in Talat Yot is public transport.

Public Transport Problems in Talat Yot

Talat Yot is not currently connected to any of Bangkok’s fast modern public transport systems, in particular the BTS and the MRT.

  • The BTS is an elevated suburban train service (sometimes referred to as the ‘Sky Train’) with 2 lines covering large parts of Eastern Bangkok, which stations on the Silom and Sukhumvit Roads as well as Siam Square.
  • The MRT is an underground train network, also with 2 lines, one of which travels in a loop around central parts of both Eastern and Western Bangkok connecting Bangkok’s new train station, Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station, to Bangkok’s former main train station, Hua Lamphong.

The inability to connect to either the BTS or MRT from Talat Yot makes it a slightly inconvenient place to stay if you plan to explore the newer parts of the city, or travel cheaply via the Airport Link to Suvarnabhumi International Airport. In theory meter taxis offer an affordable alternative to using the BTS and MRT as metered fares are often similar to using the BTS or MRT if two or more people travel together. However, foreign visitors, and even Thai people living in the city, find it very difficult to locate a taxi driver willing to use their meter. It’s very common for taxi drivers in the Talat Yot area to demand fixed fares which are much more expensive than metered fares.

Bus Services from Talat Yot

The cheapest way to connect with the BTS or MTR networks from Talat Yot is to take a public bus. The simplest option is to go to one of the bus stops on the Ratchadamnoen Klang Road and take either bus 15, 47, or 49 to Siam Square. The Ratchadamnoen Klang Road is the major road in the area running parallel to the Khao San Road and passing Democracy Monument.

By bus the journey to Siam Square takes around 30 minutes and immediately before reaching Siam Square passengers can alight close to the entrance to National Stadium BTS Station.

River Boat Services from Talat Yot

Another option for travel from Talat Yot is to take a Chao Phraya Express Boat service. The closest Chao Phraya Express Boat pier to the Khao San Road is Pier 13 on the Phra Arthit, only 650 metres walking distance from the western end of the Khao San Road.

Depending upon which boat service you take, Chao Phraya Express Boat services stop at over 30 different river piers. The two piers where you can most easily connect with BTS or MRT services are Central Pier (Sathorn) and Pier 22 (Bang Pho). Central Pier is to the south of Talat Yot and the best place to go if you plan to join the BTS to visit Siam Square, Silom Road, or Sukhumvit Road. Pier 22 is located to the north of Talat Yot close to an MRT station. Travellers heading to either Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal or Bangkok Northern Bus Terminal are better off travelling via Pier 22 than Central Pier because the overall journey time will be considerably shorter.

Canal Boat Services from Talat Yot

A third way, and perhaps the most exciting option, to travel from Talat Yot is by canal boat. From the Khao San Road it’s a 1 km walk to the western most stop on Khlong Saen Saep canal boat service, which is Panfa Leelard Pier close to the eastern end of Ratchadamnoen Klang Road.

The Khlong Saen Saep canal boat service operates along a single 18 km route on an east-west axis across the city. Notable stops on the Khlong Saen Saep canal boat route include Nana Nua Pier (near the southern end of the Sukhumvit Road) and Pratunam Pier (easy walking distance to Siam Square).

Khlong Saen Saep canal boat services run from 05:30 and 20:30 and fares range from 8 to 20 THB depending upon the length of your journey.
