About Travel to Ranong

Ranong, rather like Surat Thani City, tends to be somewhere that leisure travellers go to on the way to somewhere else, particularly Koh Phayam. This said, the town does have some attractions, and it does attract a steady stream of visitors who stay in the town for several days to enjoy the area.

Staying Overnight in Ranong

Ranong is a medium sized town with a population of around 17,000 permanent residents which, considering its size, has fairly good facilities for leisure travellers.

Hotels in Ranong

There are around 30 hotels and guesthouses in the town, ranging in price from around 500 THB a night to slightly over 2,000 THB for probably the best hotel in the town, Numsai Khaosuay Resort. Also worth considering is Rattana’s Resort, which costs around 600 THB a night and has a scenic riverside location, and is within easy walking distance of hot springs.

Restaurants in Ranong

There are also around 40 restaurants and cafes which are scattered around the town, rather than in a cluster in a particular street or area. For this reason it’s a good idea to do some research before you go out to eat as Ranong isn’t the type of town where you can easily find what you want to eat by simply walking around.

Most of the restaurants in Ranong serve Thai food, with a heavy emphasis on seafood. International cuisine is available and two of the better restaurants which serve Western dishes in particular are Buono and FarmHouse Restaurant Ranong.

Travel to Koh Phayam

There are two types of boats providing passenger services from Ranong to Koh Phayam, speedboats and wooden ferries.

• Speedboats: Speedboat services to Koh Phayam depart from Ranong Pier, which is located 6 km by road to west of Ranong Bus Station. By speedboat the journey takes around 40 minutes and typically costs from 400 to 500 THB. Different operators charge different prices for much the same service.

• Wooden Ferry: The Tai Kak Ferry runs once a day at 10:00 from Ranong to Koh Phayam. The journey takes 2 hours but the tickets cost only 200 THB per person. The Tai Kak Ferry departs from Tai Kak Pier, which is just 8 km by road to the south west of Ranong Bus Station.
