About Travel to Khao Lak
Khao Lak is the name for a collection of small towns located on a 20 km stretch of coastline, most of which is white sand beach. The largest of the settlements is Bang La On, which is also the most popular with tourists. Khao Lak is 80 km from the nearest airport and as a consequence is popular than other beach resorts in Thailand, such as Ao Nang and Phuket, which are easier to get to from Bangkok. Nonetheless, Khao Lak still attracts fairly large numbers of foreign and domestic tourists. A lot of accommodation in Khao Lak is in larger mid range to expensive accommodation with guests taken there on charter buses from Phuket Airport. Independent travellers are fewer in number.
Besides the luxury hotels, laid back atmosphere and great beaches, Khao Lak also has a smaller, but worth visiting, national park called Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park. Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park has well sign posted walking trails to waterfalls and view points. The other activity people come to Khao Lak for is diving or snorkelling trips in the Similan Islands. Around the 9 islands that make up the Similan Islands are some of the best diving and snorkelling trips sites in Thailand. Because the Similan Islands are located quite a long way from the mainland snorkelers and divers often choose to stay overnight in the Similan Islands, and live aboard dive boats are very popular as a consequence.
