About Krabi Town

Krabi Town doesn’t have a beach and is not as popular a tourist destination as nearby Ao Nang, Railay or islands in the province such as Koh Phi Phi.

Tourist Attractions in Krabi Town

What Krabi does have is lots of character, some interesting places to visit nearby and some very lively markets. The major tourist attraction in the area is Wat Tham Suea, which means Tiger Cave Temple. Wat Tham Suea has a fantastic hill top shrine which takes some effort to reach, but that effort is worth it for the fantastic views of the local countryside. The temple also has some interesting caves, from which its name is derived. Wat Tham Suea is located 9.3 km by road from Krabi Town centre.

The town itself has a wonderful riverside area with several boat piers and a sculpture garden. The best time to visit is the early evening as the sun is setting, just after which a lively night market opens near the riverside where you can enjoy a drink and an inexpensive meal with a mixed crowd of tourists and locals.

Markets in Krabi Town

Krabi has other fantastic markets as well. The Maharaj Food Market, in the centre of town, is the largest fresh food market in Southern Thailand. It opens early every morning of the week and has a large seating in between rows of stalls selling cooked foods. This is a popular place for local people to go for breakfast as well as to shop. If you are luck enough to be in Krabi Town on Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening then definitely head to the Walking Street Market which opens from 16:00. As well as plenty of souvenir and clothing stalls, there is a stage with live music and lots of places to buy a wide range of inexpensive food and drinks, including beer and cocktails.
