Bus Stations in Phuket
Phuket Bus Terminal 2 is an out of town bus station not connected to Phuket’s local transport network. For onward travel by public transport you have 2 options: a relatively expensive taxi, or a very cheap shared taxi service from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 to Phuket Bus Terminal 1. The cheap shared taxi service, which we recommend, uses a distinctive large pink vehicles and departs every 20 minutes from Platform 12. Phuket Bus Terminal 1 is right in the centre of Phuket Town, and the departure point for minivan and shared taxi services to a wide range of destinations in Phuket, as well as bus services to Phanga Nga and Khao Lak.
Phuket Town
Phuket is a large island and offers a variety of different experiences depending upon which parts of the island you visit. In terms of historical and culutral attractions, the most intersting part of the island in Phuket Town. Before tourism became the island’s major industry, Phuket’s economy was based on tin-mining, rubber and coconut farming. The tin mining industry attracted a large numbers of immigrant workers, particularly from China, and Phuket Town has an old Thai Chinese community living in the town centre in an area characterised by its colourful Chinese shophouses and grand Sino-Portuguese style mansions.

Patong Beach in Phuket
What Phuket Town doesn’t have, however, is a beach. The most popular beach destination in Phuket is Patong, which is on the west coast of Phuket only 14 km from Phuket Town. A direct shared taxi service to Patong departs frequently from Phuket Bus Terminal 1. Patong is a long narrow town which stretches the length of the beach. About halfway up the beach is Patong’s infamous Walking Street, which features large numbers of Go Go Bars. The beach front road and most other parts of Patong are much more family friendly. The prices charged by hotels and restaurants varies a lot dpending upon how close they located to the beach front, with establishments located to the back of the town offering generally the best value.
