About Travel to Pattaya
Pattaya is a large city which has expanded to join with other nearby towns to create one of the most populous urban areas in Thailand. The city centre itself has over 300,000 permanent residents and the larger municipal an estimated 900,000 or more full-time inhabitants. In addition to this, Pattaya is Thailand’s third most popular destination after Bangkok and Phuket attracting nearly 10 million visitors a year, many of whom stay overnight in one of the city’s more than 100,000 hotel rooms.
Popularity of Pattaya
Pattaya’s popularity as a tourist destination started, according to local legend, during the 1960s when American soldiers started taking holidays in Pattaya whilst on leave from fighting in Vietnam. Setting aside the question of who first popularised the idea of going on holiday in Pattaya, the city’s closeness to Bangkok has been the main driver of the city’s development. From Central Bangkok it’s around 2 hours driving time to Pattaya, and from Suvarnabhumi International Airport the driving time is 90 minutes.
Tourism in Pattaya
Pattaya attracts a diverse range of visitors. A significant proportion of visitors to Pattaya are single men who go to the city to drink alcohol in bars. This group, however, is only one part of the overall visitor numbers to Pattaya. Thai families on vacation make up a large share of the visitors to the city, as do increasing numbers of visitors from other Asian countries such as India and China.
Different parts of the city appeal to different types of visitors. For example, families with young children may want to avoid certain streets in Pattaya with a visible sex-industry, such as Walking Street and Soi LK Metro. The very central part of Pattaya is in general perhaps the least family friendly part of Pattaya, with better areas for families being Jomtien to the south and Naklua to the north.

Family Friendly Attractions in Pattaya
One of the reasons many families choose to come to Pattaya is that there are lots of larger visitor attractions, such as amusement parks, close to the city. Among the more popular of these types of attractions are:
- Buddha Mountain: 109 metre tall carving of the Lord Buddha.
- Wat Phra Yai: 18 metre tall statue of the Lord Buddha located on a hill top.
- Cartoon Network Amazone: cartoon themed water park.
- Nong Nooch Botanical Garden: arguably Thailand’s most impressive tropical garden.
- Ramayana Water Park: the largest waterpark in Thailand.
- Pattaya Dolphin World: aquarium with dolphins.
- Sanctuary of Truth: impressive newly constructed wooden temple complex with intricate wood carvings.
- Silverlake Winery Pattaya: vineyard with stunning scenery located 23 km to the south of Central Pattaya which is open to the public.
