About Travel to Koh Kradan

Located approximately 65 km by sea to the south of Koh Jum, Koh Kradan is another even smaller and more remote island that also doesn’t attract massive numbers of tourists because it’s difficult to get to and the facilities on the island are basic. Most visitors to Koh Kradan are on day trips. Visitors who stay overnight get to enjoy the island with virtually no one else there, that is before the tours start arriving around 10:00 to 11:00 and start to depart from around 14:00.

Facilities on Koh Kradan

Other than the island’s 8 resorts, and a campsite and restaurant operated by Thailand’s national parks service, Koh Kradan has no facilities whatsoever for visitors. The island is not connected to a mains electricity supply, everything runs on generators and solar power. Nor does the island have an ATM machine, or even a shop beyond a small range of items sold at the reception of most resorts.

WiFi is available at all of the island’s resorts, although the signal can be variable as can the supply of electricity. Visitors who want continuous connectivity to the internet should consider purchasing a Thai SIM card with sufficient credit to last the duration of their trip to Koh Kradan.

Transport on Koh Kradan

There is no land based transport on Koh Kradan. The only ways to travel around the island are by walking along the beach, through the jungle, or taking a local boat service.

The lack of transport on the island isn’t a problem for most visitors because the island is very small, roughly 3 km long and 1 km wide, and also because there are aren’t that many places to visit on the island.

Koh Kradan has 4 beaches with adjacent resorts, and a further 2 unnamed difficult to reach beaches in the north of the island. By far the longest, and most developed beach, is the 1.5 km long Koh Kradan Beach on the east coast of the island. Speedboat services arrive into and depart from Koh Kradan Beach. The other three beaches (Ao Nieng Beach, Sunset Beach and Mali Sunset Beach) can be reached fairly easily from Koh Kradan Beach by walking along trails through the thick jungle of the island’s interior.

Accommodation on Koh Kradan

It’s relatively expensive to stay on Koh Kradan compared to other more accessible islands such as Koh Lanta, and the choice of accommodation is limited. Prices range from around 1,500 THB a night for basic bungalow at the long running Paradise Lost Resort to more than 10,000 THB a night at the considerably more luxurious Mali Resort.

To some extent there are two tiers to the accommodation on Koh Kradan. The cheaper accommodation tends to be most popular with younger foreign visitors on extended holidays in Thailand, and the more expensive accommodation attracts a higher proportion of wealthier Thai tourists seeking to avoid the crowds in destinations such as Koh Samui or Phuket.

Food in Koh Kradan

Food Prices in Koh Kradan tend to be a lot higher than on the mainland. This is because everything needs to be transported to the island by boat and unloaded manually onto the beach. The best value for money on the island in terms of food is generally to be found at the small restaurant operated by the national park service.

One major culinary strength of the island, surprisingly, is Italian food. Several of the resorts are run by Italians and they produce high quality Italian style cuisine as a consequence. The pizza served at Coral Garden Resort, for example, gets very good reviews, as does the Italian food at Kalume Village, Reef Resort, and Mali Resort.

For moderately priced Thai cuisine also try the restaurant at Kradan Island Resort.
