About Travel to Koh Muk

Koh Muk is located about 60 km by sea to the south of Koh Jum off the coast of Trang Province in southern Thailand. From Koh Muk you need to travel another 120 km south by sea to reach Langkawi in Malaysia.

Four Islands

Koh Muk is part of a cluster of four islands which are often visited together on tours and excursions because of their proximity. The other three islands are Koh Kradan, Koh Ngai and Koh Libong.

Koh Kradan and Koh Ngai are very small islands with basic facilities. Koh Libong is the largest island of the cluster with the greatest range of amenities, although it tends to be the least visited. Koh Muk, on the other hand, is the most popular of the 4 islands for overnight stays. Koh Muk has more and better value accommodation than Koh Kradan or Koh Ngai. Also Koh Muk has electricity from the mainland, whereas the electricity on Koh Kradan or Koh Ngai is supplied either by generators or solar power.

Geography of Koh Muk

Koh Muk is approximately 4 km long and 3 km wide. This small island has two population centres where nearly all the hotels, restaurants and bars are located. The larger of the two is Baan Koh Muk in the centre of the east coast of the island. Baan Koh Muk is located on the island’s main beach, Sivalai Beach.

The second smaller village is Garnet Beach (also known as Charlie’s Beach or Farang Beach) which is located on the south west coast of the island. There is little development on Garnet Beach itself. Most of the accommodation is located on the approach road to the beach.

Hotels in Koh Muk

Hotel booking websites list just over 30 hotels in Koh Muk. Koh Mook Hostel tends to offer the cheapest accommodation on the island, which is in a dormitory room for around 500 THB a night depending on the season. At the other end of the scale, Koh Mook Sivalai Beach Resort charges from around 8,000 THB a night for its most basic room. Good mid range options include Koh Mook Riviera Beach Resort, which typically charges from around 2,000 THB a night, and Rinna Resort which charges from 3,000 THB a night.

Activities in Koh Muk

Koh Muk has one major tourist attraction, Emerald Cave (also known as Morakot Cave).

Located on the west coast of the island, near Garnet Beach, the Emerald Cave is a sea cave which you can swim through at low tide to reach a hidden lagoon with a beach. This is the most popular and spectacular tourist attraction in the area and it attracts lots of visitors on day tours. One of the advantages of staying overnight on Koh Muk is that you can visit the cave either early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid visiting at the same time as the day trippers.
