Phuket Town doesn’t have a beach but it does have lots of places of historical interest as well as a good range of reasonably priced hotels. Of particular interest is Phuket’s Old Town area which features a lots of Sino-Portuguese style buildings constructed in the late 19th and early 20th Century. During that period Phuket had a prosperous mining industry which attracted a large number of Chinese immigrants. The descendants of those early immigrants still live in the Old Town area of Phuket Town, although many of the larger old mansions in the town have been opened to tourists, such as the Chinpracha House, or turned into upmarket businesses, such as the famous Blue Elephant Restaurant.

Phuket’s most popular beach, Patong Beach. is located 14 km by road to the West of Phuket Town. Regular and inexpensive shared minivan services to Patong Beach depart from Phuket Bus Terminal 1 throughout the day. Patong Beach is just under 3 km long with clean white sand and during the tourist season it’s normally safe for swimming. Patong Town is very developed and has a very wide range of hotels, restaurants and bars. The liveliest part of the town is the infamous Walking Street, which is a 340 metre stretch of road close to the centre of Patong Beach which is lined with Go Go bars.
