During that period Phuket had a prosperous mining industry which attracted a large number of Chinese immigrants. The descendants of those early immigrants still live in the Old Town area of Phuket Town, although many of the larger old mansions in the town have been opened to tourists, such as the Chinpracha House, or turned into upmarket businesses, such as the famous Blue Elephant Restaurant.
Phuket’s most popular beach, Patong Beach. is located 14 km by road to the West of Phuket Town. Patong Beach is just under 3 km long with clean white sand and during the tourist season it’s normally safe for swimming.
Patong Town is very developed and has a very wide range of hotels, restaurants and bars. The liveliest part of the town is the infamous Walking Street, which is a 340 metre stretch of road close to the centre of Patong Beach which is lined with Go Go bars.
