About Travel to Koh Chang

Koh Chang is a large island, almost as big as Koh Samui, about 70% of which is uninhabited and mountainous national park land. Most of the island’s tourist accommodation is located on the west and southern coasts of the island close to sandy beaches. The hilly and heavily forested interior of the island is an attraction in it’s own right with a number of hiking trails and bird spotting opportunities.

Accommodation on Koh Chang

Hotel booking websites list around 140 hotels, resorts, and guesthouses in Koh Chang. The price per room per night ranges from over 6,000 THB a night for luxury hotels such as the Santhiya Koh Chang Resort, to around 300 THB a night for a bed in a shared dormitory in a hostel such as Tuk Tuk Guesthouse.

Overall, accommodation on Koh Chang represents good value for money compared to other better known holiday destinations in Thailand. The type of accommodation which is particularly good value is mid-range accommodation. Detached bungalows with air-conditioning and sea views are available for under 2,000 THB a night in hotels such as the Koh Chang Bailan Beach Resort.

Where to Stay in Koh Chang

There are places to stay dotted the entire way around the coastline of Koh Chang, however, the four most popular places to stay (listed below from north to south) are located on the west coast of the island near the best beaches:

  • White Sand Beach: This is the closest west coast beach to the island’s main ferry port, in the north. White Sand Beach is the most developed part of the island. The beach itself is very short and lined with resorts, as is the coastline stretching south. The main road running through the town is also lined with restaurants, shops, bars, and more tourist accommodation. This is a busy destination.
  • Klong Prao Beach: Located 6 km to the south of White Sand Beach, Klong Prao Beach is the longest beach on the island. It’s also the quietest beach on the island with several very relaxed beach restaurants and three large resorts just back from the beach.
  • Kai Bae Beach: Located a further 5 km to the south of Klong Prao Beach, Kai Bae Beach is a smaller town than White Sand Beach, with fewer tourists, but still a good range of independent bars and restaurants.
  • Lonely Beach: Only 3 km by road to the south of Kai Bae Beach, Lonely Beach is the destination of choice for younger visitors. The beach has a dozen or more late night bars, most notably Himmel and Ting Tong Bar which play loud music all night, every night, throughout the tourist season. Visitors to this beach are advised to choose their accommodation carefully because in some areas it gets very noisy in the evenings.

  • Muay Thai: There is a Muay Thai gym and a Muay Thai stadium in White Sand Beach.
  • Hiking: There are numerous trails you can follow in the island’s interior, including walks to waterfalls and up Khao Salak Phet, which is the tallest hill on the island rising to 744 metres above sea level.
  • Kayaking: Koh Chang has a professionally run sea kayaking centre (S.E.A. Kayaking by Kayak Chang) located on the south coast of the island.
  • Other Activities: There are also Thai cooking classes, snorkelling trips, and a canopy walk/zip-line centre in Koh Chang.
