About Travel to Siem Reap

Siem Reap City is located 5 km by road to the south of the Angkor Archaeological Park, which is Cambodia’s best known tourist attraction. Siem Reap is a city very much built on tourism, having been transformed from a tiny village to Cambodia’s second largest city following the archaeological discoveries of Henri Mouhot in the late 19th Century.

Siem Reap City Centre

Over 3 million people a year visit Siem Reap and the city has a very well developed tourist infrastructure as a consequence. It has a wide range of hotels and restaurants from very cheap and basic to more luxurious accommodation in period properties. Siem Reap City also has lots of nightlife, particularly on Street 108 which is better known as Pub Street because of the many bars there catering primarily to foreign visitors.

Visitors wanting to avoid the large crowds of visitors as much as possible might consider staying at one of the hotels on the edge of the city, such as the The Embassy Angkor Resort & Spa or the Lotus Blanc Hotel & Resort. Alternatively, if you plan to stay out late enjoying the nightlife consider one of the more central location hotels such as The Funky Village or the Onederz Siem Reap.

Attractions in Siem Reap City

As well as visiting Angkor Archaeological Park, there are several places of interest to visit in Siem Reap City itself. Three places in particular which we recommend visit are:

• Angkor National Museum: This museum is the main centre city centre attraction. The exhibits mostly relate to the temples in the Angkor Archaeological Park.
• Senteurs d’Angkor Workshop: Slightly outside the city cente, on a turning off National Route 6 (the road to the airport), this attraction features over 100 Cambodian people making things using traditional Cambodian craft work. The products are for sale along with food.
• Cambodian Cultural Village: Also located on National Route 6 but slightly closer than Senteurs d’Angkor Workshop, the Cambodian Cultural Village is a 210,000 square metre site with miniature versions of important historical monuments and recreations of traditional Cambodian villages. This attraction is also sometime referred to as Angkor Green Park.

Angkor Archaeological Park

The first thing to understand about Angkor Archaeological Park is that it’s very large, covering over 400 square kilometres and contains hundreds of very old temples. Although, the most famous of the temples are located relatively close to the entrance to the park visitors still need to arrange their own transport to travel between the temples. The distances involved are much too far to walk and there is no public transport within the park itself.
