Ao Nang is a small town, with around 8,000 permanent residents, located 18 km by road to the west of the provincial capital, Krabi Town. Ao Nang is a very popular tourist destination.

The main attraction of Ao Nang is its 1.4 km long Ao Nang beach, which has fine white sand and is normally suitable for swimming from November through to May. To the north west of Ao Nang is another long beach, Noppharat Thara Beach, and to the south east is Railay West Beach, which is only accessible by boat. Boats to Railay depart from Ao Nang Beach, although a considerably cheaper boat service to Railway departs hourly from nearby Ao Nammao Pier.

Most of Ao Nang’s shops, bars and restaurants are located on the road that runs parallel to Ao Nang Beach. There is a wide choice of bars and restaurants, ranging from places serving relatively low cost Thai food to international restaurant chains like McDonalds and themed sports bars.
The beach road area becomes very lively at night. There are some similarities between Patong in Phuket and Ao Nang, and both destinations have very visible go-go bars. The better value bars and restaurants in Ao Nang are located on the road leading away from the beach, such as the excellent Bombay Palace.
