About Travel to Railay
Railay is a popular destination located to the east of Ao Nang Beach and the west of Krabi Town. Railay is a peninsula which is inaccessible by road and that’s part of its appeal, although a significant number of visitors now make the journey by boat to Railay so it has lost some of the appeal it once had a remote destination.
Facilities in Railay
Railay has a wide range of amenities for visitors. The most built up part of the peninsula is behind East Railay Beach which has independent shops, bars and restaurants, as well as a Muay Thai school. For anything other than basic medical care, however, you would need to travel by boat to board a car or ambulance to the main hospital in Krabi Town. Visitors who may need specific medicines during their visit are advised to buy their medicines before they come to Railay.
Beaches in Railay
Railay has four main beaches and most visitors will stay in accommodation near one of those beaches:
- Railay East Beach
- Railay West Beach
- Phra Nang Beach
- Tonsai Beach
The most popular beach is Railay West Beach, and this is where most of the luxury accommodation is located. Railay West Beach is also the drop off point for local boat services from Ao Nang Beach, and as a consequence during busy times the beach becomes very full with day trippers.
Phra Nang Beach, just to the south of Railay West Beach, tends to be less busy and has more affordable accommodation, as well as a cave that is accessible from the beach which is well worth visiting. To the north of Railway West Beach, Tonsai Beach is difficult to access on foot from other parts of the peninsula and is the least developed of the four beaches. Tonsai Beach is also close to the best climbing routes in Railay and a significant proportion of the visitors are climbing enthusiasts.
Railay East Beach, on the opposite side of the peninsula to Railway West Beach, is where most long distance speedboat and ferry services arrive and depart. Railay East Beach is not a good beach for swimming, however, the accommodation there is normally the cheapest in Railay and it’s a fairly easy walk to reach a beach which is better for swimming. Visitors thinking about a longer stay in Railay should consider basing themselves in Railay East because of the nearby shops and other recreational facilities like gyms.
