About Travel to Koh Chang

Koh Chang is a large island, the third largest in Thailand 30 km long by 13 km at its widest point, with a land area of approximately 211 square kilometres.

Development on Koh Chang

The population of Koh Chang, estimated to be from 5,000 to 8,000, is relatively small. As a point of comparison, Koh Samui has a land area of 229 square kilometres and a population variously estimated as somewhere between 50,000 and 70,000.

One of the reasons for this is because the interior is very hilly, with the highest point on the island rising 744 metres above sea level. The other reason is that much of the island is protected national park land and development of any kind is not permitted. This benefits the local wildlife, particularly bird life on the island.

Tourism in Koh Chang

Mass tourism in Koh Chang is a relatively new development, with both Thai and foreign tourists starting to come to the island in significant numbers from around 2010 onward. A lot of the visitors to Koh Chang come for short stays. The main ferry piers to the island are about half a day driving time from Bangkok making it a convenient destination for a long weekend break for city dwellers.

Koh Chang is a pleasant alternative to other more developed destinations on the upper east coast of Thailand, in particular Pattaya, and delivers relatively good value for money in terms of accommodation close to the beach.

Where to Stay in Koh Chang

Koh Chang has four main places where most of the leisure visitors to Koh Chang choose to stay: White Sand Beach, Lonely Beach, Kai Bae Beach and Klong Prao Beach. White Sand Beach is by far the most popular beach and the most developed. It’s also the closest beach to the main ferry piers.

White Sand Beach has lots of mid-range accommodation, as well as bars and restaurants catering to foreign tourists. Lonely Beach is normally the second busiest part of the island. Once known as a place for younger backpackers, Lonely Beach has developed over the past decade. Nonetheless, Lonely Beach still tends to attract different types of visitors to White Sand Beach, and its late night bars, such as Ting Tong Bar, have more of an ‘island feel’ to them than the establishments on the main road at White Sand Beach.

Things to Do in Koh Chang

Koh Chang doesn’t have as wide a range of activities, particularly activities for children, as islands such as Phuket or Koh Samui. A lot of the visitors to Koh Chang only come for short stays and are content to spend their time enjoying the beach. This said there are some activities you can do whilst staying in Koh Chang:
