About Travel to Pattaya

Pattaya is a large city, with over 300,000 people living in the central zone of the city and over 900,000 living in the wider municipal area. It’s also a diverse city that offers visitors lots of different types of experiences and attracts a really wide range of visitors.

Visitors to Pattaya

Tourism is widely believed to have begun in Pattaya in the early 1960s with off-duty American military personnel coming to what was then a fairly small town to enjoy the beach. Pattaya has continued to be popular with single male visitors ever since which large number of bars and female workers catering to them.

Pattaya is also popular with Thai tourists, and visitors from other Asian countries, largely because the city is a 2 hour drive away from Bangkok and only a 90 minute journey from Thailand’s main airport, Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

The city successfully caters to both single men on holiday and Asian families on holiday, and different parts of the city are more popular with certain types of visitors than others. Single male visitors tend to prefer the central part of Pattaya city near Pattaya Beach and its ‘entertain zones’ such as Walking Street. Families tend to prefer to stay the areas to the north and south of the centre such as Jomtien.

Beaches in Pattaya

The busiest beach in Pattaya is Pattaya Beach which is located right in the centre of Pattaya City. Pattaya Beach is 3 km long and not very wide. Few people would describe Pattaya Beach as one of Thailand’s best beaches. Much of the sand is taken up with tightly groups rows of sun loungers and umbrellas which visitors rent for the day. The sea is also very full of boats and jet skis, and the water quality is not so good.

In the city itself, there are other beaches to the north and south which are better. The 6 km long Jomtien Beach to the south is a much better place to swim and to sunbathe, and much less crowded. To the north the 1.2 km long Wong Amat Beach is also a pleasant alternative to Pattaya Beach.

For the best beaches in the area, however, we recommend taking a day trip to Koh Larn, which is a small island located 8 km to the east of Pattaya City. Inexpensive ferry services to Koh Larn depart from Bali Hai Pier, which is at the south end of Pattaya Beach. Koh Larn has 8 good beaches, plenty of restaurants, and a small number of hotels.

Shopping in Pattaya

Pattaya City has 6 shopping malls. The largest of these is Central Festival, which is located right in the central part of the city. Central Festival in Pattaya is one of the largest malls in South East Asia and offers everything from budget food in the basement, designer clothing, and a cinema and bowling alley on the top floor.

The other 5 malls in the city (Tuk.Com, P.S. Plaza, Royal Garden Plaza, Mike Shopping Mall and Central Festival Center) which are similar but smaller, with more independent retailers, and more opportunities for bargain hunters.

Family Friendly Activities in Pattaya

Pattaya has lots and lots of high fairly investment leisure facilities developed by private entrepreneurs making it arguably Thailand’s most successful mass tourism destination after Bangkok and Phuket. Pattaya doesn’t have anywhere near the same range of historic buildings as Bangkok, or great beaches like Phuket, and has relied a lot on facilities like amusement parks and animal based attractions to attract tourists.

Some of the leisure facilities in Pattaya, such as the gardens, golf courses, and water parks, are very good quality and highly recommended. The attractions involving animals of all kinds are more problematic because of the strong possibility that the animals are mistreated.

In terms of high quality leisure facilities, there are 5 places which we most recommend that families consider visiting:

  • Sanctuary of Truth (wooden temple complex)
  • Ramayana Water Park (largest water park in Thailand)
  • Nong Nooch Botanical Garden (series of themed tropical gardens)
  • Silverlake Winery Pattaya (vineyard with visitor attractions)
  • Cartoon Network Amazone (cartoon themed water park)
