About Travel to Railay

Railay is a small peninsula located just to the east of Ao Nang Beach, in Krabi Province, which is inaccessible by road because of the hilly terrain. The peninsula is about 1.7 km long and 400 metres wide at its narrowest point, and has some similarities to area of Koh Phi Phi where Tonsai Village is located.

Travel to Railay

You can walk to Railay from Ao Nang Beach along the famous Monkey Trail, however, most visitors travel to and from Railay by boat. Railay is a beautiful coastal area and it attracts lots of day trippers from Ao Nang.

The boat trip between Ao Nang and Railay is short and relatively inexpensive for holiday makers. Boat services from Ao Nang arrive into Railay West Beach, whilst longer distance boat and ferry services arrive on the east coast of the peninsula where there is a floating pier.

Beaches in Railay

Railay has four main beaches, and it is around these beaches that Railay’s hotels, restaurants and shops are clustered. Railay West Beach is the most developed part of Railay. It gets busy in high season with both people staying in Railay and with people visiting for part of the day.

Phra Nang Beach

Located just to the south of Railay West Beach, Phra Nang Beach is considered by many to be the most beautiful beach in Railay and notable for the large cave at the eastern end of the beach. It tends to be less busy than Railay West Beach.

Tonsai Beach

The least developed of Railay’s four beaches is Tonsai Beach. Part of the reason for this is that Tonsai Beach is more difficult to reach. It’s fairly easy to walk between the other three beaches in railay, but hard work to walk to Tonsai Beach, although you can take a taxi boat. Tonsai Beach is close to many of Railay’s best climbing routes and attracts lots of climbers for that reason. The facilities on this beach are more basic, but not necessarily better value for money than other parts of the peninsula.

Railay East Beach

The beach itself at Railay East Beach is not great for swimming. The area behind the beach, however, has lots of facilities, including two Muay Thai schools and more shops than elsewhere in Railay. There’s also some cheaper accommodation and restaurants in this part of Railay. For these reasons, visitors coming to Railay for longer stays may want to consider basing them in Railay East Beach.
