About Travel to Railay

Daytime Services to Railay

All daytime services from Koh Phangan to Railay commence with a sea crossing to Surat Thani Province on either the Raja or Seatran car ferry, except for the Lomprayah service which uses either a shared speedboat for fast catamaran ferry. From the ferry pier in Surat Thani Province passengers on these services then travel into Surat Thani City to join a bus or minivan to Krabi Province. On arrival in Krabi Province, passengers are taken either to Ao Nang or Ao Nammao Pier for the final part of the journey to Railay in a local wooden boat.

Nighttime services to Railay

Overnight services from Koh Phangan to Railay follow much the same route as daytime services. The major difference is that the journey takes a lot longer as passengers travel on a sleeper boat. A sleeper boat is a slow moving converted commercial fishing or cargo vessel which has been repurposed to provide a large cabin with a mattress on the floor assigned to each passenger. The passenger cabins are not air-conditioned and there is limited outdoor space on these ships. It’s a far from luxurious experience that families and older visitors may wish to avoid.

Beaches in Railay

There are four beaches in Railay, each with their own accommodation and their own good and bad points:

  • Railay West Beach: Railay West Beach, often referred to simply as ‘Railay Beach’ is the most popular beach in Railay, partly because it’s the closest one to Ao Nang.
  • Phra Nang Beach: Close to Railay West Beach, Phra Nang Beach is for many people the most beautiful beach in Railay, and it attracts slightly fewer tourists than Railay West Beach.
  • Railay East Beach: This is where the larger boats and ferries arrive and depart. This isn’t a good swimming beach but it has lots of less expensive accommodation, shops, and activities such as Muay Thai.
  • Tonsai Beach: Located a long steep walk to the north of Railay West Beach, Tonsai Beach is close to the best climbing routes and tends to attract a lot of climbers for that reason. The village behind the beach also has a more bohemian feel to it than the rest of Railay.
