About Travel to Railay

Railay is a peninsula in Krabi Province, located just to the east of Ao Nang Beach, which takes more effort to reach than other mainland beach destinations in the province.

Getting to Railay

Railay is cut off from the rest of Krabi Province by tall cliffs and hilly terrain. You could walk from Ao Nang to Railay but there is no road connection.

There are local boat services connecting Railay to the rest of Krabi Province departing from Ao Nang Beach, and Ao Nammao Pier, which is located 24 km by road from Krabi Airport, and arriving on the western side of the peninsula.

Longer distance boat services, including both speedboat and ferry services, arrive at a pier on the eastern side of the peninsula from lots of different places including Koh Lanta and Phuket.

Staying in Railay

Railay has four main beaches, each with accommodation and their own unique character:

• Railay East Beach: This is where the long distance ferry and speedboat boats arrive and depart. Railay East Beach has a small town and some of the best value for money accommodation, however, the beach itself is not particularly good for swimming or sunbathing.
• Railay West Beach: Railay West Beach is the longest and most popular beach in Railay. This beach attracts both overnight guests and day trippers. It’s a quick and fairly cheap boat ride from the very busy resort town of Ao Nang and lots of people come to Railay West Beach from Ao Nang during the tourist high season. Railay West Beach has lots of hotels and resorts, as well as tourist oriented bars and restaurants.
• Phra Nang Beach: Located just to the south of Railay West Beach, Phra Nang Beach is less busy, arguably more beautiful, as well as cheaper than Railay West Beach. This beach has plenty of accommodation and an interesting cave with a shrine which you can walk to.
• Tonsai Beach: Tonsai Beach is located to the north of Railay West Beach. It’s quite a long walk to reach Tonsai Beach (there’s no road access) from the other three beaches and it receives far fewer visitors. Tonsai Beach has more basic accommodation and fewer facilities. Tonsai Beach is, however, close to some great climbing routes and many of the people who come to stay in Tonsai Beach are climbing enthusiasts.

Activities in Railay

There are lots of activities you can do in Railay and plenty of tour companies offering a wide range of half and full day trips.

The most popular activities are sea based. Snorkelling and diving are popular, as is kayaking. There is a cluster of small islands about 5 km to the south west of Railay that are popular places to visit on snorkelling and diving trips. and to kayak around.

Railay’s most famous activity, however, is rock climbing. There are lots of different climbing routes and lots of climbing schools in Railay. The difficulty of the routes varies a lots, with something to offer climbers at nearly all levels, including routes where people free climb just a few metres over the sea.

There is also a popular, but slightly dangerous, steep walk up to a viewpoint during which you need to pull yourself up a small cliff using ropes. It’s not suitable for children but adults can usually make it if they are fit and wear sturdy shoes. The continuation of the same walk down to a secluded lagoon surrounded by cliffs is even more difficult and best attempted with climbing gear, although some people walk there and back again without ropes or any other safety equipment. This walk starts from Railay East Beach.
