About Travel to Koh Phayam

Located about 30 km by sea from Ranong, Koh Phayam is one of Thailand’s lesser developed large islands.

Tourism in Koh Phayam

Koh Phayam has tended to receive a lot less visitors than other Thai islands, such as Koh Chang and Koh Samui, and that’s partly because transport links to Koh Phayam are less developed than tourist destinations, and partly because Koh Phayam is some distance from other popular tourist centres.

Thailand’s railway network doesn’t reach the west coast, so the only ways to travel by public transport to Ranong are by bus, minivan or a relatively expensive flight from Bangkok. Ranong is also the only place where you can board a scheduled boat service to Koh Phayam.

Koh Phayam is located in a cluster of mostly uninhabited islands, many of which are located within Myanmar and generally off limits to leisure visitors. Other popular islands in the Andaman Sea, such as Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi, are a long way from Koh Phayam and it’s not possible to visit Koh Phayam as part of an island hopping tour on scheduled boat services.

Amenities on Koh Phayam

Facilities for tourists on Koh Phayam are very basic. Koh Phayam now has 24 hour a day electric, reliable WiFi, and a single ATM machine, which is frequently out of operation for one reason or another. Other than that, there’s a small number of shops by the main pier, some independent restaurants and bars, and mostly small bungalow resorts. Koh Phayam doesn’t really cater for luxury tourism.

Koh Phayam is also unusual in that it has no cars, and the roads on the island are vgenerally very narrow as a consequence.  Bicycles and motorbikes are available to rent on the island, and travelling around the island by bike or motorbike is one of the more popular activities for visitors.

Where to Stay on Koh Phayam

Koh Phayam is 8 km by 5 km at its longest and widest points. Even taking into account the island’s very narrow roads, it doesn’t take very long to travel between different parts of the island if you rent a motorbike. In the evenings, however, the lack of street lighting makes travelling around the island more difficult so visitors tend to spend their evenings within walking distance of their accommodation.

Most of the tourist accommodation in Koh Phayam is clustered around its two main beaches: Ao Yai (Long Beach) and Ao Khao Kwai (Buffalo Bay). Ao Yai is the longest beach on Koh Phayam, slightly under 3 km, and it’s also the most popular with the best facilities. This beach is where most families choose to stay. The other distinctive feature of Ao Yai is the large waves which make it a popular place for surfing or using boogie boards.

Ao Khao Kwai is a less popular beach, with cheaper accommodation and smaller waves. Ao Khao Kwai has more of a bohemian feel to it, and attracts a higher proportion of younger independent travellers than Ao Yai.
