About Travel to Koh Yao Noi

Koh Yao Noi is the smaller of a pair fairly large islands located in Phang Nga Bay approximately halfway between Phuket and Krabi.

Tourism in Koh Yao Noi

Despite being only 30 minutes away from Phuket by speedboat, Koh Yao Noi is relatively undeveloped when compared to other popular Thai islands such as Koh Phi Phi and Koh Samui. The island receives a steady stream of foreign holidaymakers but far less than Phuket. The additional journey time from Phuket or Krabi discourages many tourists from visiting.

About the Island

The island is 11 km long by 7 km long, with a land area approximately a quarter that of nearby Phuket. The island’s ring road takes about 2 hours to drive around at a slow speed on a motorbike.

Koh Yai Noi doesn’t have a large town, but 13 small villages. The island’s residents are mostly Muslim and from the Chao Ley ethnic group, known sometimes as ‘Sea Gypsies’ because traditionally they were nomadic, moving seasonally from beach to beach. Local people are still active in traditional industries such as farming and fishing, although many also work in the tourist industry.

Most of the tourist accommodation on Koh Yao Noi is clustered around the island’s three main beaches: Thao Khao, Klong Jark and Pasai beaches.

Amenities in Koh Yao Noi

Koh Yao Noi is not as remote or basic as some of the islands further south, such as Koh Ngai or Koh Kradan. Koh Yao Noi is connected to the mainland electrical grid. The island also has a medical centre, ATM machines, and a small range of shops.

The accommodation on Koh Yao Noi tends to be more expensive than on the mainland, and less good value for money than can be found in Phuket. At the top end of the scale in terms of price, the island has two impressive luxury resorts: Cape Kudu Hotel and the Six Senses Yao Noi. In addition there are plenty of 3 star style bungalow resorts as well as much more basic, cheaper accommodation set back from the coast.

Things to do on Koh Yao Noi

One of the most popular activities for visitors to the island is to rent a motorbike and explore the different beaches. Large parts of the island are covered in dense forest. It’s a pleasant environment with an abundance of bird and animal life, most notably the island’s large population of hornbills.

Another popular activity is boat tours. Koh Yao Noi is located in the centre of the 400 square kilometre Phang Nga Bay. Phang Nga Bay is famous for its many steep-sided islands and bears some similarities to Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. It’s a shorter journey from Kho Yao Noi to visit these islands than it is from Phuket for Krabi making it an ideal base for exploring the bay by boat. Kayaking tours around the bay are also popular.
