About Travel to Koh Yao Yai

Koh Yao Yai is a fairly large island in Phang Nga Bay to the east of Phuket and west of Krabi. Despite being very to Phuket (24 km by speedboat) Koh Yao Yai is relatively underdeveloped. Along with the slightly busier neighbouring island of Koh Yao Noi, Koh Yao Yai offers visitors something different to more developed destinations like Phuket, Koh Samui and Pattaya.

Journey from Koh Tao to Koh Yao Yai

Direct services from Koh Tao to Koh Yao Yai follow the same route:

  • Ferry from Koh Tao to Chumphon on the mainland.
  • Bus from Chumphon to Bang Rong Pier in Phuket.
  • Speedboat from Bang Rong Pier to Chong Lard Pier in Koh Yao Yai.

It is also possible to travel independently to Koh Yao Yai via Surat Thani to the south of Chumphon. Travel via this route is more expensive, particularly as visitors will need to take a taxi for the last part of the journey to Chong Lard Pier after they crossed over the bridge onto Phuket.

Facilities on the Island

For a large island (27 km long by 5 km wide) Koh Yao Yai has relatively few facilities for visitors. Koh Yao Yai isn’t as basic as some of the smaller islands to the south, such as Koh Kradan, but there’s little on the island compared to Phuket or Koh Samui.

Koh Yao Yai has 24 hours a day electric, a small hospital, an ATM machine, some branded shops and a concrete spine road making many of the coastal parts of the island easily accessible.

The major development on the island is in the form of large hotels such as Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort & Spa and Anantara Koh Yao Yai Resort & Villas. In addition to these high investment resorts, there are plenty of more basic resorts and rental houses available along with a range of small independent restaurants.

Activities on Koh Yao Yai

Koh Yao Yai has a Muay Thai camp and some yoga courses. Most of the activities on the island available to visitors are beach or sea based. Scuba diving and snorkelling are popular, and there are good sites close to the island, as is kayaking.

Another popular activity for visitors to Koh Yao Yai is boat tours around Phang Nga Bay. The bay has 44 islands. Some of the islands have partially submerged caves, some have spectacular shapes, like Koh Ta-Pu, and another has a settlement of the ancestors of Javanese fisherman who are believed to have arrived in the bay in the 18th Century.
