About Travel to Railay
Railay is located on a peninsula only a short distance from Ao Nang Beach. However, it’s not so easy to reach Railay because there’s no road access. The beaches of Railay are surrounded by steep hills and headlands which means to travel to Railay you need to go by boat.
The first groups of tourists to come to Railay were climbers travelling the world on extended holidays on a limited budget. The cliffs on the pensinula offer excellent climbing routes and the peninsula’s isolation appealed to travellers wishing to pursue ‘alternative lifestyles’. Railay has changed since that time and it has become more of a mass tourism destination with more expensive resorts. The beaches and scenery remain, however, very beautiful. It’s well visiting Railay.
Railay East Beach
Railay East Beach is the main arrival point for ferry and speedboat services. The beach is generally considered not that good for swimming. The small village behind the beach has some of the least costly accommodation and restaurant and is popular with visitors with lower budgets willing to walk to the more popular parts of the peninsula.

Railay West Beach
Often simply referred to as Railay Beach, Railay West Beach is the most popular tourist destination of the four main beaches on the peninsula. There are lots of bars and restaurants on this beach, and a range of accommodation. It gets busy on Railay West Beach at certain times of the year attracting day trippers from nearby Ao Nang.
Phra Nang Beach
Phra Nang Beach, located a short way South of Railay West Beach, is perhaps the most beautiful of the beaches in Railay. There is a small settlement with accommodation and restaurants behind the beach, but its not as large as the one close to Railay West Beach. As well as being great for swimming, there is a cave at the Eastern end of the beach which is interesting to visit.
Tonsai Beach
Tonsai Beach is least accessible of the beaches in Railay. It’s a difficult walk from Tonsai Beach to Railay West and East beaches so taking a further boat journey to get there with your bags is advisable. Tonsai Beach is where most of the climbers choose to base themselves. Tonsai Beach is also the least commercial of the beaches in Railay and the one which tends to suit younger independent travellers the best.
