About Travel to Chiang Mai

Located 820 km by road from Pattaya, Chiang Mai is the cultural and economic capital of Thailand’s Northern Region. It’s also one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations and it offers visitors a different type of holiday experience to Pattaya or any of Thailand’s other coastal cities.

Chiang Mai City

Chiang Mai is an old city. The well preserved walled centre of the city, often referred to as ‘Chiang Mai Old Town’, was established in 1296. It’s grown considerably over the last 700 years well beyond the defensive walls of the city centre and now has a population of around 1.2 million people living in the wider metropolitan area.

Whilst Chiang Mai Old Town is where most of the city’s tourist attractions are located, it’s not the only part of the city where leisure visitors stay overnight. The Old Town area has its own character. There are plenty of small cheap guesthouses to stay at in the Old Town, lots of inexpensive small restaurants, and a series of bars, such as as Zoe In Yellow, which are very popular with younger visitors. Chiang Mai’s largest weekly event, a Sunday evening street market, also takes place in the centre of the Old Town.

Instead of staying in Chiang Mai Old Town, many visitors choose to stay in hotels in Chiang Mai’s Riverside Area, which is to the east of the Old Town close to the Ping River. This part of the city has some larger and more luxurious hotels, and gets very lively at night, especially on or near the Changklan Road. There are also a number of busy restaurants nearby on the other side of the Ping River, such as The Riverside Bar & Restaurant, which is probably Chiang Mai’s best known bar.

Temples in Chiang Mai Old Town

Chiang Mai Old Town is roughly 1.5 km long by 1.5 km wide and contains lots of Buddhist temples. Estimates of the actual number of temples vary from 50 to 100. The temples also vary a lot in age, size, and style, and some are more popular with visitors than others.

The two most visited on the temples in Chiang Mai are Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang. Both temples were founded in the 14th Century, and have been added to and enlarged over the centuries. Wat Phra Singh is best known for its two large golden chedi towers, and a very impressive old wooden prayer hall. The main features of Wat Chedi Luang are its enormous partially collapsed chedi tower, a large early 20th Century shrine hall, and a series of smaller older temple buildings featuring intricately carved wood. Chiang Mai’s City Pillar Shrine is also located within the grounds of Wat Chedi Luang.
