Koh Phi Phi is one of Thailand’s best known tourist destinations. It’s located just to the south of Phang Nga Bay and to the west of Koh Lanta.

Journey from Phang Nga to Koh Phi

There are two parts to the journey from Phang Nga to Koh Phi Phi.

The first part of the journey is by road from Phang Nga Bus Station to one of the ferry ports in Krabi Province. The main ferry port for travel from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi is Klong Jilad Pier, which is located 7 km by road from Krabi Bus Terminal. The distance by road from Phang Nga Bus Station to Klong Jilard Pier is 87 km.

The second part of the journey is from Klong Jilard Pier to Tonsai Pier in Koh Phi Phi. By shared speedboat the sea crossing is scheduled to take from 50 minutes to 1 hour. By wooden ferry the journey takes about 2 hours.

Phi Phi Islands

Koh Phi Phi refers to a collection of 6 islands located close together, although the name Koh Phi Phi is also often used to refer just to the largest of those 6 islands:

  • Koh Phi Phi Don
  • Koh Phi Phi Leh
  • Koh Mai Phai
  • Koh Yung
  • Koh Bida Nok
  • Koh Bida Nai

The only one of these 6 islands which is permanently inhabited is also the largest of the islands, Koh Phi Phi Don. Koh Phi Phi Leh, the next largest island, has two bays one of which was used as a film set for ‘The Beach’. Koh Mai Phai and Koh Yung each have a single beach which visitors sometimes go on day trips. Koh Bida Nok and Koh Bida Nai are small steep sided islands which are popular dive sites.

Koh Phi Phi Don

Koh Phi Phi Don is the only one of the 6 islands with tourist accommodation or restaurants. The island is 7.8 km long by 3.6 km at its widest point and unusually shaped with a thin strip of land connecting the eastern and western parts of the island.

Koh Phi Phi Don is very hilly, with dramatic sea cliffs along parts of the coast line. The island has only 2,000 to 3,000 permanent residents and very little land flat enough to build even a small village. There are 3 main places where the majority of the tourist accommodation is located. Nonetheless, the island hosts well over 1 million visitors a year and during the tourist season that means Koh Phi Phi Don gets very busy.

Tonsai Village

The majority of the accommodation, restaurants, bars, gyms, shops, and pretty much everything else in Koh Phi Phi is located in Tonsai Village. Tonsai Village is located on the thin strip of flat land connecting the two halves of the island, which is roughly 1 km and 165 metres wide at its narrowest point. Over 100 hotels and hostels are packed into this small area, along with several hundred bars, restaurants, as well as shops.

Tonsai Pier is located on the south side of the village, and the 1.1 km long Loh Dalum Beach is located on the north side. Tonsai Pier is the main point of arrival for ferry and speedboat services to Koh Phi Phi and the majority of overnight visitors stay in Tonsai Village for reasons of convenience and, for many younger travellers, to enjoy the nightlife.

Long Beach

Tonsai Village isn’t the only place to stay on Koh Phi Phi Don, and some visitors prefer not to stay there because it’s so busy and often noisy until late into the evening. A second popular place to stay is Long Beach, which is about 2 km to the south east of Tonsai Village. From Tonsai Village it’s a 45 minutes walk to Long Beach, or a 100 THB per person ride in a local water taxi.

Long Beach is a wide white sand beach which is 680 metres long and directly faces Koh Phi Phi Leh. There are around 6 resorts on Long Beach, most priced between 2,000 THB and 4,000 THB. There aren’t any independent restaurants or bars on Long Beach, however, for variety in the evenings visitors staying on Long Beach can try restaurants at other resorts.

Laem Thong Beach

Laem Thong Beach is located on the north east coast Koh Phi Phi Don. It’s too far to walk from Tonsai Village, however, Laem Thong Beach has its own ferry pier and several of the ferry companies provide services to Laem Thong Beach. Andaman Wave Master, for example, operates 4 services a day in the tourist season from Tonsai Pier to Leam Thong Pier. The journey takes around 30 minutes.

Laem Thong has a 600 metre long white sand beach with excellent views of the dramatic sea cliffs on the north coast of Koh Phi Phi Don. Laem Thong is more of a village than Long Beach, with 4 large resorts dominating the beach side area, and a selection of smaller guesthouses and independent restaurants behind that. Some of the large resorts are fairly luxurious with room rates of 13,000 THB a night or more, others charge from around 3,000 THB a night.
