About Travel to Loei
The small town of Loei, with around 20,000 permanent residents, is the largest settlement and administrative centre of Loei Province. Loei Province, located immediately to the west of Udon Thani, borders Laos and is the most mountainous part of Thailand. Loei is a very popular destination for Thai tourists. The town itself has many old buildings, and is largely focused on catering to the sophisticated demands of tourists from Bangkok. The town has many boutique style shops and eateries, and micro-breweries making craft beers. The nearby town of Chiang Khan, 50 km to the north of Loei, has even more of the same niche tourism outlets and is slightly more popular as a place to stay overnight than Loei itself.

Neither Loei town, or Chiang Khan, are the main attractions for visitors to Loei. It’s the mountains that most visitors come for and in particular the cooler weather at the top of these mountains. The main three destinations are the Phu Kradueng National Park, Phu Rua National Park and Phu Luang National Park, along with the 1,768 metre high Phu Thap Boek located right on the southern tip of Loei Province. The Phu Kradueng National Park is the most popular and unusual of the national parks in Loei Province. The highlight of the park is the 1316 metre high Phu Kradueng mountain. Phu Kradueng mountain has large relatively flat heart shaped plateau with a steep slope on one side and a more shallow one on the other allowing easy walking access to the top. Camping is permitted at the top of Phu Kradueng mountain with temperatures sometimes dropping to freezing point in December and January.
