About Travel to Khon Kaen
It’s a long way by road from Phuket to Khon Kaen. Depending on the route you take, the distance travelled is just under 1,300 km. Bus services from Phuket to Khon Kaen travel eastwards towards Surat Thani before turning northwards to travel to Bangkok. The other route, travelling north from Phuket towards Ranong along Highway 4, is generally slower as the road is narrower and has more turns and bends.
The arrival point for long distance public services to Khon Kaen is Khon Kaen Bus Terminal 3, which is an out of town bus station, 7.5 km away from the city centre. There are shared taxi services from Khon Kaen Bus Terminal 3 to the city centre, however, a quicker and slightly more expensive option is to take a meter taxi to the city centre, which should cost under 100 THB depending on the traffic and your final destination.

Over 100,000 people live in Khon Kaen city centre, making it one of the four big cities in Thailand’s north eastern region. The north eastern region of Thailand receives the fewest number of foreign tourists of Thailand four regions, and Khon Kaen itself has very little of interest to most foreign visitors in terms of tourist attractions. Nonetheless, Khon Kaen is a lively city, with good facilities, that also has a very large student population. Khon Kaen has several large further and higher educational institutions located in and near the city.
Bars and restaurants which cater to foreign visitors are clustered on and near Soi Kosa, which is near the Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid. The Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid is Khon Kaen’s most famous hotel and, as one of the tallest buildings in the city, an iconic local landmark. In terms of things to see and do in the city, there are four main tourist attractions:
- Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon, also known as Wat Nong Waeng, which is a temple with a 9 storey pagoda accessible to visitors.
- Wat Chai Si, which features some notable wall murals and a small local history museum.
- Khon Kaen National Museum, which is dedicated to the region’s archeological finds.
- Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake and park, which are located near the centre of the city.
