About Travel to Koh Ngai
If you are looking for something completely different to what is on offer in Phuket then Koh Ngai might well be the perfect option for you. Koh Ngai is only 4 km by 2 km at its widest point, compared to Phuket which is 49 km long and 18 km wide. Koh Ngai is also considerably less developed that Phuket. Koh Ngai has no large towns, virtually no nightlife, no roads, no cars, no mains electric supply and not even a single ATM machine. What Koh Ngai does have, however, is 4 excellent beaches and hill top view point in the centre of the island that you can easily walk to. Koh Ngai is also great for snorkellers and divers. The beaches on the East and South coasts have reefs within swimming distance of the shoreline. Koh Ngai also has 3 diving schools and plenty of local diving sites which allows the dive school to provide very cheap diving trips.

The only downsides of Koh Ngai as a holiday destination are that it’s hard work to get there and it’s relatively expensive. Koh Ngai is located to the South of Koh Lanta to the North of three other large islands which form a cluster, Koh Kradan, Koh Libong and Moh Muk. It’s a fairly short journey to reach these other three islands but a fairly long trip to get to the closest airports, which are in Trang and Phuket. Trang also has a train station so its possible to travel from Koh Ngai back to Bangkok by sleeper train via Trang Town.
Koh Ngai is not particularly good value for money compared to Phuket. Even basic bungalows are expensive, and more standard hotel rooms that might cost 1,000 to 2,000 THB in Phuket cost 4,000 to 6,000 THB a night in Koh Ngai. Food and drink are also much more expensive in Koh Ngai than they are in Phuket, which is not surprising as the cost of transporting goods to Koh Ngai is much more expensive than it is to Phuket which is connected to the mainland by road.
