About Travel to Koh Yao Yai

Koh Yao Yai is located in Phang Nga halfway between Phuket and Krabi. There are 44 islands in Phang Nga Bay and Koh Yao Yai, measuring 27 km by 5 km, is the largest and it also has the best facilities making it an ideal base for boat tours around Phang Nga Bay.

Tourism in Koh Yao Yai

Koh Yao Yai is fair less busy and fair less developed than Phuket. The relatively short journey from Phuket is enough to discourage large numbers of people from coming to Koh Yao Yai.

The People of Koh Yao Yai

The majority of the people who live on Koh Yao Yai are Muslim. Many of these people have ancestors who where once nomadic, moving between islands within the bay setting up temporary villages and making a living from fishing. There are small villages dotted around the coastline and fishing, and to a lesser extent agriculture, are still important although many locals have also found employment in the tourist industry.

Beaches of Koh Yao Yai

There are lots of beaches in Koh Yao Yai, the three most popular of which are Loh Paret, Laem Had and Koh Jark. Koh Jark on the East Coast is the most developed of these three beaches, followed by Loh Paret on the West Coast which is the location of the impressive Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort & Spa. The most visually stunning beach, however, is Laem Had on the North coast which features a sand bar that stretches far into the ocean at low tide.

Activities on Koh Yao Yai

Touring the island on a rented motorbike is a very popular activity. The island has one main concrete road running from the Northern tip of the island all the way to the island’s most Southerly point. Smaller roads, some of which are sealed, branch off this main road and visitors can explore smaller beaches, view points and local villages.

Other activities which are popular on Koh Yao Yai include kayaking in the mangrove forests, snorkelling and scuba diving. Koh Yao Yai has some excellent local dive sites such as Shark Point, Anemone Reef and King Cruiser Wreck.

Koh Yao Yai has very little nightlife compared to parts of Phuket such as Patong. There are, however, a cluster of independent bars located near both Chong Lard Pier and Laem Yai Pier for visitors looking to go for a drink in the evening outside of their resort.
