About Travel to Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is a very small island, 3 km long by 1.8 km at its widest point, located 60 km off the coast of mainland Thailand and 40 km to the north west of Langkawi in Malaysia. The island is thought to have around 1,000 permanent residents and attract as many as a million leisure visitors a year, most of whom visit during the island’s short tourist season from November through to April each year.

Accommodation in Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is a destination where you definitely need to book in advance during the tourist season. Room rates on the island are also considerably higher than on the mainland or in large Thai islands, such as Koh Lanta. Many visitors stay for only a short period on Koh Lipe for this reason.

In total Koh Lipe has slightly over 30 hotels, guesthouses, and resorts. In addition to this Koh Lipe has over 20 holiday homes available for short term rental. The cheapest overnight accommodation is in a shared dormitory. A night in a dormitory costs around 700 THB at Hook & Stay.  At the other end of the scale a night at Beachfront Charming Lipe Beach Resort in a ‘superior bungalow’ costs from 20,000 THB.

Food and Drink on Koh Lipe

Like the accommodation, food and drink on Koh Lipe is much more expensive than on the mainland or more easily reached Thai islands. The choice of food on the island, however, is extensive with around 90 restaurants and bars on the island.

Most types of cuisine are available on Koh Lipe, including Italian and Indian. The most popular restaurants on the island tend to be seafood restaurants, many offering fixed priced seafood buffets. These eat all you can seafood restaurants are principally aimed at Asian tourists, particularly Malaysian and Singaporean tourists who visit the island in great numbers. Restaurants such as Elephant Cafe & Bar or Ten’s Moons’ Restaurant are also popular with foreign tourists from non-Asian countries.

Beaches on Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe has 3 main beaches:

• Pattaya Beach is the beach where the speedboats arrive and depart during the tourist season. Despite being far too busy with boats and people arriving and departing during the day to enjoy properly, it’s a beautiful 1.1 km long beach that quietens down around from 16:00 and then starts to become lively again around sunset. The bars and restaurants on Pattaya Beach can be popular late into the evening during the tourist season.
• Sunrise Beach is generally considered to be the most beautiful beach on the island and the most sought after spot for accommodation. Sunrise Beach stretches most of the length of the east coast of the island (1.2 km) and joins with Bulow Beach at the island’s northern most tip. The water colour at Sunrise Beach, often compared to the Maldives, and the scenic views of islands such as Koh Adang, make this the island’s premier beach.
• Sunset Beach is a 400 metre long stretch of white sand on the west coast of Koh Lipe. It’s a popular place for visitors to come in the late afternoon to watch the sunset. There’s a bar on this beach that lays out mats on the sand for customers to enjoy a sunset drink or two.

By way of comparison, the island’s smallest beach is the 20 metres long Pitiusas Beach, which is free to visit although many visitors are discouraged from doing so because in order to access the beach you need to walk through part of the Pitiusas Beach Resort.

Walking Street

Walking Street is the main street in Koh Lipe. It runs 480 metres northwards from a signposted entrance in the centre of Pattaya Beach.

Walking Street has the highest concentration of bars and restaurants on the island, and it gets busy in the evenings as a consequence. Notable establishments on Walking Street include King Crab Restaurant, Pooh’s Restaurant, Progress Seafood Buffet, Maya Bar, and Elephant Cafe and Bar. Walking Street is also where you will find the island’s only 7-11 convenience store, sales offices for diving schools and tour operators, travel agents, and a small range of shops.
