About Travel to Chumphon

Chumphon is a small city located in a predominantly rural province in Thailand just to the north of Surat Thani Province. Chumphon City has no major visitor attractions, however, it is an important transport hub in terms of connections to the Thai railway network and ferry services to Koh Tao. Chumphon also has a busy bus station and a small airport with flights to Bangkok.

Staying Overnight in Chumphon

Chumphon has a moderately good range of facilities for foreign visitors. There are several hotels and restaurants within easy walking distance of Chumphon Railway Station which we can recommend.

Many overnight visitors to Chumphon visit the large night time food market on the Krumluang Chumphon Road which is an excellent place to try distinctive Southern Thai style cuisine cooked using authentic recipes and sold at very cheap local prices. For visitors seeking ‘international cuisine’ or a restaurant meal, the Fame Tour restaurant is a popular choice as is Papa Pub & Restaurant.

Chumphon has plenty of inexpensive hotels, the best two of which are Salsa Hostel (550 metres from the train station) and Chumphon Euro Boutique Hotel (850 metres from the train station). For more luxurious accommodation visitors need to travel about about 1 km from the train station to reach either Loft Mania Boutique Hotel or A-TÉ Chumphon Hotel.

Beaches in Chumphon Province

Chumphon Province has little in the way of historical attractions, or famous temples, to visit. What it does have though is 222 km of coastline, much of which is undeveloped. Two beaches which have been partially developed are Hat Sai Ri and Hat Thung Wua Laen.  Hat Sai Ri, which is 23 km by road from Chumphon City, in particular has several resorts, bars, and independent restaurants, as well as a coral reef which is popular for snorkelling.

Travel to Koh Tao

There are two different ferry services you can take from Chumphon to Koh Tao.

The fastest and most comfortable ferry service to us is the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry. This service departs 2 to 3 times daily, depending on the season, from a ferry pier located 27 km by road from Chumphon City. The Lomprayah High Speed Ferry company also operates a connecting bus and ferry service direct from Chumphon Train Station to Koh Tao which departs twice daily at 06:00 and 12:00.

The other type of ferry service you can take from Chumphon to Koh Tao is the ‘night boat service’. The night boat service refers to several large fishing and cargo vessels which have been converted into passenger ferries with sleeper berths for passengers. These services depart at 21:00 in the evening from various ferry piers on the Tha Thaphap River, several kilometres to the south of Chumphon City. Night boat ferries move slowly, taking around 8 hours to reach Koh Tao, and the facilities on board are also very basic.
